Job Classification: Full-Time Police Officer - Lateral Entry

Salary Information: Starting pay at $27.29**Lateral Transfer: experienced officers: based on evaluation by the City of the lateral transfer officer’s ability to perform required duties at a level commensurate to their years of experience, the City may at its sole discretion compensate an extend vacation benefits to a lateral transfer officer up to the same rate as established for current employees in the same classification and who have the same time in service with the City as the lateral transfer officer.

Department Overview: The Perrysburg Police division consists of 33 full time sworn officers serving nearly 21,000 residents covering an area of approximately 12 square miles. In addition to the standard uniform patrol assignments, the Police Division has officers serving in a variety of ancillary assignments including DARE, Bike Patrol, the Field Training Program, the Detective Bureau, Technical Crash Investigation and the Use of Force Training Program.
Area Information: The City of Perrysburg is located in Wood County in Northwest Ohio. It is situated just off of I75 along the Maumee River, just minutes away from Lake Erie. Perrysburg has a beautiful historic downtown district, nationally ranked library and outstanding school system. Perrysburg also boasts an extensive park system, including 11 parks covering 238 acres. Perrysburg was voted as one of Ohio’s Best Home Towns by Ohio Magazine in 2009.Perrysburg is home to the largest reconstructed wooden walled fortification in North America that was designed to defend Ohio against British invasion in the war of 1812.

Prior Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years full time law enforcement experience. Recently laid off officers with at least two years full time experience that have been laid off for less than one year are also eligible.
Necessary Certifications: The City of Perrysburg Police Division requires each candidate to have a current Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy Certificate. A copy of your current OPOTA certification must be submitted to Human Resources. This can be done by attaching a digital copy of the required documents to the application filed via the GovernmentJobs.com site
Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: Applicant disqualifiers include any felony level conviction or currently being charged or under indictment for any felony level offense. Expunged and sealed criminal records are subject to review by the Police Division for disqualifying criminal history.
Driving Disqualifiers: A current driver’s license suspension or a current restriction of driving privileges based on pending traffic or criminal offense or a traffic or criminal conviction.
Veteran’s Points: Honorably discharged veterans are entitled to receive an additional 5% added to their passing score. In order to receive this credit, candidates must submit a legible copy of their DD214s to the HR office no later than the posted closing date. Late submissions will not be accepted. Information regarding physical ability testing: Candidates obtaining the top six passing scores (including veteran’s points) on the written exam will be invited to physical ability testing at a date to be determined by the City. Testing will be conducted at the Perrysburg Junior High School. The components of the test are outlined below:
Physical Ability Testing Procedure:
Phase 1. The candidate will exit from the driver’s seat of a patrol vehicle and run 300 feet (100 yards). The time clock will be started when the candidate opens the driver’s door. The candidate will need to stay on the pavement or stone path while running. If he/she enters the grass while running, then the candidate will be disqualified. Proceed to Phase 2.
Phase 2. The candidate will climb up five steps and move approximately 75 feet in the prescribed direction and descend down five steps. The candidate is required to step on all five steps while climbing and descending, if the candidate fails to do so, then he/she will be disqualified. Proceed to Phase 3.
Phase 3. The candidate will move approximately 75 feet to the next obstacle and jump over a box that is approximately 18H”x12W”x36L. Proceed to Phase 4.
Phase 4. The candidate will move approximately 75 feet to the next phase and load six inert rounds into each of two pistol magazines for a total of 12 rounds. The candidate will charge the duty weapon with one magazine and pull the trigger six times with the dominant hand, the candidate will then perform a magazine reload, charge the duty weapon again and pull the trigger six times with the non-dominant hand. If the candidate fails to utilize both the dominant and non-dominant hand as instructed for this phase, he/she will be disqualified. Proceed to Phase 5.
Phase 5. The candidate will move approximately 75 feet to the next phase and will open the driver’s door and push the power door lock/unlock switch to unlock the rear doors, the candidate will then move to the right rear door of the police cruiser and remove the 165 lb dummy from the right rear seat of the cruiser and drag the entire dummy 15 feet away from the cruiser, in the prescribed direction, across a line marked on the ground. Proceed to Phase 6.
Phase 6. The candidate will move to the rear of the police vehicle and push the disabled vehicle approximately 20 feet. The rear bumper will need to cross the line marked on the ground. Proceed to Phase 7.
Phase 7. The candidate will re-enter the police vehicle's driver’s seat and put the vehicle's transmission shift lever into Park, remove the ignition and handcuff key and unlock a set of handcuffs from the steering wheel. The candidate will raise his/her hands to stop the clock.
