Job Classification: Volunteer Police Reserve Officer

The Sweet Home Police Department is continuing its efforts to establish an ongoing list of Volunteer Police Reserve Officer applicants to provide assistance to full-time police department personnel. This is a Non-Paid/Volunteer position. Candidates must complete the National Testing Network FrontLine National exam and ORPAT.

Candidates will need to sign up with the National Testing Network and have successfully completed and passed all phases of this stage of the hiring process to continue in the hiring process.

Vision:
Visual Acuity Standards 1.1. Monocular vision must be at least 20/30 (Snellen) corrected in each eye and not worse than 20/100 (Snellen) uncorrected in either eye. 1.2. Binocular vision must be at least 20/20 (Snellen) corrected. 1.3. Applicant whose uncorrected vision is worse than 20/100 must wear soft contact lenses to meet the corrected vision requirement.

College:
Preferred, but not required.

Additional Requirements:
Must be able to attend the Mid-Valley Reserve Training Academy. Reserve Officer pays for half of tuition initially, and is reimbursed after 18 months of continuous service in good standing.

Hiring Process:
Written application and supplemental application, written and physical testing with NTN, panel interview if passing scores with NTN, background investigation, psychological exam, medical exam.

Qualifications :

Successful completion of NTN testing process at applicants expense, background/criminal investigation, psychological exam and medical exam
Equivalent to a high school diploma
Previous customer service experience
Ability to work independently and/or in a team environment
Ability to defuse a potentially volatile situation
Ability to communicate effectively by radio and phone
Valid Oregon Driver's License
Experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties

Duties:

Attend Reserve Police Officer Academy and participate in local training
Assist full-time, sworn police officers
Write citations/warnings to violators of ORS and ordinances, as authorized by Chief of Police
Assist with community service events
Tag abandoned vehicles for code enforcement
Transport radar trailer to designated locations throughout the city
Assist with traffic control during events
Assist with cold thefts (no suspects)
Assist with errands as needed
Assist with prisoner transports to/from jail
Bike Patrol/Foot Patrol
Provide security for courtroom and/or school events
May be called upon to provide testimony in court
General patrol functions after completion of academy, required field training, and LEDS Manual

Training:

MVRT Reserve Police Academy (volunteer pays half cost up front, and is reimbursed later)
In house field training process
In house training for familiarization with SHPD report writing program
In house equipment usage training
In house task-specific instructional training
Blood Borne Pathogens Training
Harassment/Discrimination in the Workplace Training
CPR/First Aid Training

Time Commitment:

Hours vary based upon tasks performed, Sunday through Saturday
Minimum 24 hours-per-month commitment
