This is a designation that only three percent of departments in the United States hold. AFR provides Industry-leading fire response and full-service emergency medical services, maintaining medical control of patience until they arrive at the emergency department. Choosing a career as a Firefighter can be one of the most challenging, exciting, and rewarding experiences of your life.
Firefighting is an inherently dangerous occupation. Emergency calls may lead to structure fires, automobile accidents, or life-threatening medical emergencies. AFR Members respond with urgency and professionalism.
Fire Rescue is a very physically demanding profession, including climbing many stairs while fully equipped. Firefighters can carry 80-100 pounds of equipment such as hoses, axes, ladders, chain saws, and extinguishers to rescue victims and extinguish the fire. Therefore, the Department provides time and equipment during your shift to maintain the expected level of fitness.
Firefighters live one-third of their career in a fire station. Work shifts are 24-hour increments, eight to nine times per month. Firefighters live and sleep in dormitory-style quarters while on duty.
When not out on a call, firefighters must constantly work at keeping the station and equipment in excellent condition. Much of the firefighters' station time is spent doing skills enhancement, maintaining living quarters, the fire station, and the equipment.
Firefighters have numerous promotional opportunities, along with the opportunity to join one of the many elite specialty programs, including the Hazmat team, wildland team, and the technical rescue team. AFR has a reputation for providing excellence in our ongoing training programs for firefighters and officers. Consider this exciting opportunity to join the Aurora Fire Rescue family.
