Salary Information: $3,891 – 5,091 per month

Benefit Information: Tillamook County provides an excellent health coverage plan for employee and eligible dependents, including medical, vision, prescription, dental, life insurance (basic, AD&D, and statutory), and long term disability. Also available are the following voluntary benefits: Flexible Spending accounts, deferred compensation accounts, supplemental life plans, and AFLAC products.
Tillamook County pays 100% of the medical premium at present. Tillamook County provides all uniforms and $500 annual equipment allowance. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate of pay.
Tillamook County employees participate in the Tillamook County Retirement Plan with the County paying their 7%, which earns an 8% annual interest. Employees can also contribute up to 10% of their monthly salary.

Paid vacation and sick time with the ability to accrue up to 40 hours in compensatory time. Employees earn 8 hours of holiday time off each month.
Eligible employees may receive incentive pay for special assignments such as: Search and Rescue Lead Coordinator earns 5% above base pay, and Bi-lingual earns 5% above base pay. DPSST Certification pay: Intermediate is 2%, Advanced is 5%.
Department Overview: The mission of the Sheriff's Office Criminal Division is to serve and protect the people and property in Tillamook County. To accomplish this mission, the Criminal Division enforces County ordinances along with County, State and Federal laws. In addition to normal patrol duties, the Criminal Division has three Marine Deputies, two Forest Deputies, two Detectives, one Deputy assigned to the Sandlake Recreational Area, and one Deputy assigned to the Garibaldi area for enhanced patrol services.
Area Information: Tillamook County was organized in 1853. Located on the north Oregon coast, it has a population of 25,250. Tillamook is the home of world famous Tillamook cheese, and the dairy industry is a major player in the local economy. Other major industries include forest products, fishing and tourism. Tillamook County is comprised of 75 miles of scenic coastline, four bays and five major rivers surrounded by the majestic Coast Range. Tillamook, the County seat, is located only 75 miles from the cultural and entertainment amenities of Portland. Tillamook County has a workforce of approximately 275 employees represented by two bargaining units.

SUMMARY: Performs general law enforcement duties to ensure the protection of life, property, and civil rights of citizens in the County of Tillamook, State of Oregon by the investigation of crimes, complaints, and other matters that relate to public welfare; community caretaking, civil service, traffic/ATV/marine enforcement, search and rescue operations. This classification is assigned to the Criminal Division of the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: (Duties assigned to this position are not all inclusive. Additional duties may be assigned. Any one position may not perform all listed duties.)
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of federal, state and county statues, rules, regulations, and ordinances that govern law enforcement activities. Considerable knowledge of policies, procedures, and practices of modern law enforcement in areas of crime prevention, criminal investigation, suspect identification and apprehension, civil rights, laws of search and seizure, rules of evidence and the care, control, custody, and transportation of prisoners. Considerable knowledge of general procedure used in court system and of the nature of legal evidence; considerable knowledge of boating laws, and statues which govern ATV operation. Considerable knowledge in the civil service process and search and rescue operations. Skills: Skill in meeting and dealing with a wide variety of people; use of firearms, emergency vehicle operation, communication equipment and other law enforcement related equipment; report writing and statistical data compilation; interviewing and listening; automated equipment and systems operation. Skill in conducting comprehensive interviews with victims, suspects, or witnesses. Abilities: Able to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; analyze law enforcement problems in the area of assignment to enforce laws and to think and act quickly, calmly, and efficiently in emergency and other conflict situations; prepare reports and collect evidence; educate the public; coordinate search and rescue efforts, read maps; remain calm and use good judgement during confrontational or high-pressure situations; utilize problem identification and resolution techniques and make decisions independently in accordance with established policy and procedures and use initiative and judgement in completing tasks and responsibilities; courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, judges, district attorney, attorneys, other law enforcement agencies, federal, state and local agencies, public agencies, community organizations, physicians, schools, correctional facility inmates, advisory committees, forestry boards and the public.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:: Minimum standards for employment as a law enforcement officer, as well as experience and training requirements for certification levels, are established in the Board of Public Safety Standards and Training Act, ORS 181.610 690, and reprinted in the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training Policy and Procedures Manual. Initial minimum standards are:
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This classification works under the direct supervision of a Sergeant. Recurring routine assignments are independently performed by employee. The employee receives general instructions regarding the scope and approach to projects or assignments, but procedures and problem resolution are left to employee discretion and interpretation. Employee estimates and manages time efficiently. Work is reviewed on a frequent basis to ensure determinations and decisions made are in compliance to Sheriff’s Office policy and procedures. Work is performed within established Sheriff’s Office policy, procedure, and directives; Federal, State and County statutes, rules, regulations, and ordinances; DPSST reference manuals; State Marine Board reference manual; court guidelines; equipment reference manuals; and accepted procedures within law enforcement profession. Employee must remain current on guidelines and uses considerable judgement in interpreting laws and guidelines and determining which laws to enforce, then follows procedures and laws closely due to nature of work.
