the position
The City of Canyon Lake is seeking qualified men and women for the position of Fire Captain /Paramedic. This recruitment is to fill one position immediately and then to establish a current employment eligibility list of qualified candidates. Under the direction of a Fire Battalion Chief or Fire Chief, as a Fire Captain/Paramedic assigned to a 48-hour shift, perform the following duties: responds to fire, medical, environmental, hazardous material, weather and disaster related emergencies; initiates emergency care to the sick and/or injured patients; renders first aid and lifesaving techniques; engages in fire prevention, suppression, and salvage activities; performs inspection and code enforcement activities; conducts public education session regarding fire/emergency/disaster practices and procedures; maintains fire station; drives Fire Department equipment; attends instruction sessions related to the job; participates in a variety of training exercises; and perform other special projects or other related duties.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Education equivalent to graduation from High School – Associates Degree preferred
· Possession of a valid California Class C with Firefighter Endorsement Driver’s License or a California Class B Driver’s License (both with tank and air brake endorsement), with current medical card, and an acceptable driving record.
· Possession of a valid California State Paramedic License and be able to obtain Riverside County Emergency Medical Services Agency accreditation as a condition of employment, including a current American Heart Association Health Care Professional/BLS card or equivalent.
· State of California Firefighter I and Firefighter II. Experience with a Paramedic provider agency is desired. (work experience may meet this requirement)
· State of California Fire Officer Certification or Company Officer 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E, and Instructor 1.
o If currently or previously employed as a Fire Officer in a municipal fire agency this requirement is met.
· Four years of experience in a full-time all-risk fire agency at a minimum rank of Firefighter and served as a Fire Captain, Fire Engineer, Driver/Operator, or acting in one of these roles.
· State of California Driver/Operator 1A and 1B.
o If previously employed as a Fire Engineer this requirement is met.
· Valid Firefighters Physical Ability Test (current within one-year of application closing date) or employed in a fire suppression position within last year.
Desirable Qualifications:
· Possession of Hazardous Materials FRO, ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700, IS-800, Low Angle Rope Rescue, S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior, S-130 Firefighter Training, Auto Extrication, and Fire Control 3 certifications.
· California State Fire Training Courses
o River and Flood Rescue Technician and/or Water Rescue Awareness.
o Rescue Systems I and/or II and Confined Space Rescue.
Compensation and Benefits:
· Compensation Range (Hourly): $88,333.93 to $107,370.44 (Paramedic).
· Holiday pay: 3.91% (equivalent to twelve 9.5-hour days) and (1) floating holiday (Included in above compensation).
· Health Insurance: Up to 100% of selected plan for employee and 80% for dependent(s).
· FLSA Pay: Fair Labor Standards Act pay (Included in above compensation).
· Life Insurance: $50,000 for employee
· Medicare: City pays 1.45% for Medicare.
· Leave: 96 hours of sick and 96 hours of vacation leave annually (1 – 10 years)
· Retirement: City paid contribution of 12.5% with employee match of 2.5%. This is a defined benefit program and not Cal PERS. 1st year employee pays 7.5% and City match at 7.5%.
· Schedule: 48/96-hour shift schedule (approximately 10 shifts per month).
Applicants are hired at a training classification for an academy that will last approximately two to three weeks. To be hired as a full-time applicant must successful complete the academy.

· Certificate of completion from a California State Fire Marshal approved Fire Academy and/or Firefighter I certificate issued by the State of California Fire Marshal.
· Copy of State of California License for Paramedic or written proof of completion of a California state approved Paramedic training program by time of appointment.
· Copy of current American Heart Association Health Care Professional/BLS, PALS, ACLS, and PHTLS/ITLS/TPATC cards or equivalent
· Copy of proof of completion of a valid Firefighters Physical Ability Testing current within one-year of application closing date) or employed in a fire suppression position within last year.
· All other certifications listed under minimum qualifications.

Prior to placement in a position, an employee must complete a pre-placement medical examination and drug test to determine fitness for duty.
