The Berea Fire Department is currently hiring for Firefighter Paramedics. FireTEAM testing is open on January 2, 2025 and must be completed by the close date of January 31, 2025.
Candidates are required to complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) as their application. You can access the questionnaire through your candidate account. The PHQ must be completed or you may not be considered further in the process.
Salary Information: 2024 starting hourly wage - $27.35 ($73,527.74/Year)
Salary is based on the current Collective Bargaining Agreement; a new agreement will be enacted in 2025.

Area Information: The Berea Fire Department proudly protects people living, working and visiting in an area of 5.9 square miles, located near Cleveland Hopkins Airport. We operate out of one station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are full-time paid firefighters. We are the proud home of Baldwin-Wallace University and headquarters of the Cleveland Browns.

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes
Necessary Certifications: Must have paramedic certification at time of hire. A strong preference will be given to candidates that already have their Ohio firefighting credentials.
Hiring Process: All candidates scoring 70% and above on the examination will be placed on an eligible candidate list. The Civil Service Commission will certify the top 25% or top 10 candidates (whichever number is larger) for further consideration. Candidates may be interviewed by a citizen panel, the Safety Director and the Mayor.Upon a conditional offer of employment, the candidate will undergo a physical and psychological examination, credit check and polygraph.
Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors: Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: A felony conviction will disqualify a candidate.Driving Disqualifiers: Must have a valid operator’s license. Alcohol and/or drug driving convictions do not automatically disqualify a candidate, but will be a factor in a hiring decision. The weight it is given will depend on the circumstances and length of time since the conviction.
Drug Use Disqualifiers: Prior drug use by a candidate will be a factor in making a hiring decision, but will not disqualify a candidate. The weight it is given will depend on the circumstances.
Military credit: Any applicant for an original appointment who has attained a passing grade on the written entrance examination, and who has completed one year or more of net active service of the Armed Forces of the United States of America and has been honorably discharged therefrom, shall be given a credit of two percent (2%) of the basic score attained on such entrance examination. This credit will be added to the basic score in order to obtain the final grade on the entrance examination. In order to qualify, you must upload your Form DD-214 through your NTN account. Any form submitted with less than 12 months net active service will not receive the credit.
Physical Agility Testing: Physical agility testing is conducted through Cuyahoga County Community College.
Candidates must submit evidence to the Berea Civil Service Commission no later than March 19, 2025 of having successfully completed the Tri-C firefighter agility test between the dates of January 2, 2024 – March 17, 2025.
