Department Overview: The Winter Garden Fire Rescue Department is a professional career department consisting of 63 personnel covering a city of approximately 18 square miles. Winter Garden's Fire Rescue Department operates out of four fire stations, strategically located throughout the City. Each location is outfitted with state of the art vehicles equipped to provide fire suppression, Advanced Life Support care, and exceptional customer service. All of Winter Garden's Firefighters are certified to meet the professional Firefighter qualifications for the State of Florida and are medically trained and licensed as either Emergency Medical Technicians or Paramedics.
Area Information: Winter Garden is located along the south shore of Lake Apopka, 20 minutes west of Orlando, this former citrus hub and historic city is home to over 50,000 residents. · Current State of Florida Firefighter II Certificate of Compliance
· Current State of Florida EMT or Paramedic License
· Current Healthcare Provider/CPR Card (BLS)
· Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Card, if Paramedic
· 16 hour minimum Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) Completion Certificate

· Copy of College Degree and Transcripts
Schooling Prior and Post Hiring: Two (2) year college degree (AS or AA) is preferred but not required.
Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors: Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: Must be free of any felony convictions. All criminal violations of law must be disclosed upon application. For the purpose of this question, a plea of guilty, no contest, or nolo contendere, even if adjudication was withheld, is a conviction. · A poor driving record will classify a candidate as undesirable.
· Any DUI, DWI arrest and / or conviction in the last five years (unless a pattern or history is detected).
· Refusal to submit to chemical test for DUI in the last five years.
· Any reckless driving while impaired ticket in the last five years (unless a pattern or history is detected).
· Any driver license suspension in the last five years.
Drug Use Disqualifiers: The City of Winter Garden is a Drug-Free Workplace.Any current (within the last twelve months) use or experimentation with drugs classified as controlled substances, or any other illegal drugs, while not under the care of a licensed physician. Any person who has sold, offered for sale, induced or attempted to induce another person in the use of illegal drugs may be disqualified.Employment Disqualifiers: Failure of any of the following pre-employment tests will disqualify a candidate:
· Driving records check
· Physical examination, including drug screening
· Background check
· Polygraph
· A poor employment record will classify a candidate as undesirable; however, it will not necessarily remove a candidate from consideration.
Additional Disqualifiers: The decision to remove an applicant's name from the selection process shall be made by the Human Resources Director (or designee). It shall be the responsibility of the Human Resources Director (or designee) to notify the applicant that his/her application will not be further considered. The following are established as reasons for which removal may be made:
· Falsification of documents (e.g., Employment Application, Personal History Questionnaire, Statement of Employability).
· Dishonorably discharged from any of the armed forces of the United States.
· A determination that an applicant is not of good moral character will result in his/her removal from consideration.
· An applicant will be removed from consideration whose overall traits are deemed as undesirable. Evidence of undesirability includes, but is not limited to:
· Demonstrated pattern of lack of responsibility
· Demonstrated pattern of problems with interpersonal relationships
· Demonstrated disregard of local, state, and/or federal law
· Beliefs which would prevent applicant from performing the job of a firefighter
· Incidents of deception
· Poor employment record
· Poor driving record
The severity of any one particular problem may, but not necessarily, cause the applicant to be removed from consideration. In determining the applicant's overall fitness, the entire background of the individual will be considered to determine if there is a pattern of behavior that is not conducive to satisfactory job performance.
Tobacco Use: The applicant must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year prior to date of application and throughout their employment with this department.
Types, Locations, and Number of Tattoos/Decals: Perspective members shall be evaluated by the Fire Chief, or his /her designee and tattoos/decals may be used as a disqualifier for potential employment. At no time shall a perspective member be employed or appointed if said person has visible tattoos/decals that are offensive, in excess, vulgar, or otherwise deemed detrimental to the professional appearance and positive public image of members. No perspective member shall have tattoos/decals of any type that are visible about the neck, head, and/or face.
