Pay Information: Step A Police Officer at $34.0252 per hour
Benefit Information for Sworn Police Officer:
Merit Longevity Pay: (5) years of service, 2.75%; (10) years of service, 5.5%; (20) years of service, 8.25%; (25) years of service, 13.0%. Other agency service as a POST certified sworn Police Officer shall apply as though earned with the City of Downey. Such pay continues subject to “meets standards” of performance.Education Incentive Pay: 6.0% Associate’s Degree and/or Intermediate P.O.S.T. Certificate. 9.5% for a Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced P.O.S.T. Certificate upon successful completion of 18-month probationary period. Bilingual Pay: $52.38 per bi-weekly pay period. Subject to certification testing and re-evaluation. Retirement: New member coverage under the 2.7% @ age 57 retirement formula and a required employee contribution of 12.25% of reportable earnings.Medical Insurance: The City’s contribution rate covers the entire cost for employee plus qualified dependent(s). Dental Insurance: MetLife or Delta Dental. The employee contribution is up to $49.85 per month. Holidays: (11) paid holidays per year. Vacation: Up to 160 hours accrual per calendar year based on years of service and hours worked. Maximum accrual is two years of accrued vacation.Sick Leave: (10) hours accrued per month based on hours worked. There is no maximum accrual.Continuing Education: The City of Downey offers a tuition reimbursement program for career development in the position/field hired. The City reimburses equivalent tuition rates charged at California State University Los Angeles and California State University Long Beach. Tuition reimbursement also includes all required books..
Department Overview: The Downey Police Department is comprised of 111 Sworn Police Officers and 56 Non-Sworn Support Personnel. The department offers a variety of assignments including K-9, Narcotics and Vice, High Tech Crimes Detective, Gang Detective, Robbery Homicide Detective, Special Enforcement Team, Motor Officer, Accident Investigator, Crime Impact Team, Special Response Team, School Resource Officer, Bike Patrol Team, Range Master, and Explorer Advisor.

PART I: Qualifying Written Examination - Applicants successful in Part I listed above will be invited, via email, to submit written examination scores through National Testing Network (NTN). Upon completion of the entry level exam, all applicant scores are automatically forwarded to the City of Downey Human Resources Office. An applicant must receive a minimum score of 70% in each of the examination components in order to continue in the selection process.
PART II: Qualifying Physical Agility (Pass/Fail): Those applicants meeting the required pass point on the written examination will be invited, via email, to the qualifying physical agility assessment.
