The City of Wheat Ridge embodies the deep roots of a City with a rich history and a strong sense of community. Its central location provides shorts commutes to major interstate highways, the majestic Rocky Mountains, and the amenities of the large metropolitan City of Denver, Colorado. Our community encompasses 9.5 square miles, Wheat Ridge is home to more than 33,000 citizens.Our growing and vibrant community is currently seeking dynamic POST Certified Police Officers for our Department who demonstrates strong leadership skills, the ability to collaborate and partner with diverse stakeholders in the community, and work cooperatively with department employees with implementing department goals and objectives. Successful candidates will demonstrate the values of Integrity, Respect, Initiative, Courage, and Perseverance. Our Police Officers also adhere to the city values of ACTION! The City of Wheat Ridge Police Department has 78 sworn officers and 35 civilian personnel commanded by the Chief of Police, serving a resident community of approximately 33,000. The community is experiencing significant redevelopment opportunities, as well as the development of two commercial areas within the city. The community is home to a large regional hospital complex, SCL Health Lutheran. The department includes two divisions, Patrol Operations and Support Services, each commanded by a Division Chief. The department has three commander positions, two in Patrol Operations and one commander in the Investigations Bureau. Our policing philosophy is a blended approach of providing police service that combines traditional policing values with community oriented policing. Community support and assistance from law abiding citizens is a critical component of the department's philosophy in preventing and deterring crime.
As an officer with the Wheat Ridge Police Department, you will handle incidents involving crime, traffic and quality of life issues helping to make Wheat Ridge a safe community in which to live, work and play. After gaining three years of experience, you can qualify to test for specialty teams such as SWAT, Crime Prevention, Crash and Traffic, or to become a detective assigned to Vice Intelligence, the drug task force or the auto theft task force.
US Citizen: Candidates must be a United States Citizen or possess proper I-9 documentation
Ability to Read/Speak English: must be able to communicate effectively in written and spoken English
College: Two (2) years (60 semester or 90 quarter hours) of college credits from an accredited college or university. ~~OR~~ At least four (4) years of active duty military service and honorable discharge
Prior Experience: Lateral Position – Must be POST certified
Physical Fitness: Must be able to perform all physical demands of the job as stipulated in the job description.
Other Requirements: All candidates who are seeking employment with the City of Wheat Ridge Police Department should be aware of certain requirements that are inherent within the profession. These may be identified by character traits that include honesty, integrity, maturity, self-discipline, initiative, problem solving, and an exceptional ability to deal frequently with traumatic occurrences. All candidates must pass all physical, medical, written, oral and psychological examinations.
