Job Classification: Deputy Sheriff - Institutions - Trainee & Certified

The Marion County Sheriff's Office is building an ongoing eligibility list for current and future Deputy Sheriff positions in Institutions.

The mission of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office is to provide our community with compassionate, professional, and quality public safety services. We are seeking both trainee and certified applicants to join our Institutions Division team as a Deputy Sheriff. The Institutions Division serves a diverse clientele through the delivery of a wide array of services. WAGES
$31.40 - $37.87Trainee Pay Rate*
$34.48 - $46.16 Certified Pay Rate*
*Hourly rate negotiable.

- Recent (within the past twelve months) REACT test with National Testing Network (NTN); OR
- Possess a four-year, post-secondary degree issued by an accredited, degree-granting college or university recognized by the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization under the provisions of ORS 348-604; OR
- Successfully completed training resulting in the award of Basic Corrections certification from Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).

Typical Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Maintains order, discipline, and security of inmates in jail.
Processes inmates admitted and discharged for transfer from facilities including booking and release, fingerprinting, photographing, and issuing supplies and clothing to new inmates.
Supervises inmates during clothing and linen exchanges, meals, visitation, commissary activities, cleaning of facilities, and performs regular hourly checks of all inmates.
Follows doctors or nurses orders and instructions in care of ill inmates.
Maintains records and files as required.
Writes reports as required.
Conducts regular security checks of the facility, including occupied sanitation facilities (restrooms, showers) and living areas, performs regular security searches of inmates (on-person) and areas they occupy.
Maintains files in an efficient and accurate fashion.
Acts as a member of non-required workgroups.
Responds to public inquiries regarding facility procedures and inmate status.
Acts as a field training officer or jail counselor when requested.
Maintains supplies for the operations of the unit.

Must meet the following State Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements:

United States Citizen within one year of employment
At least 21 years of age at the time of employment
Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation
Of good moral fitness, without legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, and conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.

Must meet the following Marion County Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent
Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services.
Selected applicants will be required to complete pre-employment questionnaires as part of the screening process.
Possess knowledge of and experience in using a keyboard and PC equipment.
Possess the ability to work rotating shifts, or other alternative work schedules and may be subject to call back.
Final candidates will be subject to a personal background investigation including, but not limited to, employment, criminal and driving histories.
Final candidates selected for this position will be required to participate in a panel interview, a psychological test, and a medical examination.
This is a safety sensitive/special needs position. Final candidates selected for this position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, including testing for marijuana. Additional Requirements For Certified Level:

Eighteen (18) months experience as a Police Officer or Deputy, OR any equivalent acceptable combination of education and Police Officer experience.
Possess a Basic Police certification from the Department of Public Safety, Standards and Training, and/or any equivalent out-of-state law enforcement accreditation recognized by DPSST; OR
Applicants who are certified in another state:

Must attend and pass the DPSST Career Officer Development Course, within 12 months of hire date.
Successful out-of-state applicants are hired at the Deputy Sheriff Trainee level and wage range until Oregon certification is achieved.

Background Check:

Finalists for this position will be subject to an extensive background investigation. Some issues that might cause an applicant to be withheld from further consideration include, but are not limited to the following:

A FELONY conviction under state or federal law, or MISDEMEANOR conviction relating to domestic violence; sex crimes; crimes against persons; unlawful use, manufacture, sale or possession of a controlled substance; weapons offenses; menacing; or any other crime that would preclude applicant from obtaining or maintaining DPSST certification.
Any false, fraudulent or misleading statement provided during the application or hiring process, whether made by the applicant or by others at the applicant’s request, may result in rejection of an application, denial of employment, or dismissal from county service. Some instances may also result in prosecution for a crime.
Any military discharge with a characterization other than honorable may require additional documentation. Marion County may request written authorization to request official military records from the appropriate branch of service to make a determination regarding fitness for employment.

Physical Requirements:
Sees close and distant objects within normal parameters; uses peripheral vision; sees at night and under dark or low light settings; demonstrates sufficient depth perception; differentiates between colors; uses olfactory senses; hears within normal range; speaks clearly; uses a loud voice to shout; sits; walks, stands and moves around in the work area for extended periods of time; climbs stairs and/or inclines repeatedly; bends, stoops, crawls and kneels; lifts and carries up to 50 lbs.; pulls and pushes up to 200 lbs.; opens doors by pushing with shoulder or kicking; reaches for and lifts up to 10 lbs.; turns neck and twists body 90º in either direction; works in an area with limited ventilation; uses chemical agents to quell disturbances/riots; works in an area that has chemical agents released into the air; works in a wide range of indoor and outdoor temperature conditions; writes legibly; grasps, handles and manipulates objects with hands; implements finger dexterity to manipulate objects; holds, aims and discharges firearms with sufficient accuracy to maintain minimum department qualifications; works flexible hours during the day and week; works day, afternoon, evening and night shift work; operates a motor vehicle; maintains a current Oregon Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record; meets DPSST requirements; and successfully completes all phases of the Oregon Physical Ability Test at hire.
