Grundy County Sheriff’s Office is taking applications for entry-level Deputy Sheriff-Patrol Officers for our Preliminary Eligibility List!

The current list will expire in September, and a new one will be formed from the applicants that test via this site. All candidates must complete testing through National Testing Network to be considered further in the process. Position Title: Deputy SheriffSalary Information: $72,050 Benefit Information:
On the job training, PTO, retirement plan, take home vehicle, continuing education/professional development, dental, health, life insurance, paid parental leave, vision. Patrol deputies are assigned 12-hour shifts on a 2-2-3 rotation, providing every other weekend as a three-day weekend.
Other benefits; Union representation, paid meal breaks, 3 hour minimum overtime for court appearance, yearly shift bid option, can earn 84 hours of compensatory time a year, shift exchange provision, 84 hours vacation after 1st year, 126 hours vacation after 5 years, 168 hours vacation after 12 years, 210 hours vacation after 20 years, 13 paid holidays at double time if worked, earn 1 sick day a month maximum 140 days, sick time pay out at 50% upon retirement, 3 personal days per year, 3 days emergency family leave, longevity pay $0.20 per hour after 8 years, $0.50 per hour shift differential for 7p-7a shift, Office in charge pay of $1.50 per hour, uniforms, vest, weapon paid for by department, education reimbursement, education incentive Associate Degree $300 Bachelors Degree $500, hourly starting pay (12/1/25) $32.99 hourly.
Department Overview
The Grundy County Sheriff's Office serves a growing county of more than 55,000 residents located in northeastern Illinois, approximately one hour southwest of Chicago. Grundy County offers a unique blend of small-town communities, family farms, expanding residential developments, and major industrial and transportation corridors. Grundy County presents a diverse law enforcement environment unlike many similarly sized agencies. The county is intersected by both Interstate 55 and Interstate 80, two of the busiest transportation corridors in the Midwest, generating significant commercial traffic and proactive enforcement opportunities. The Illinois River, extensive rail networks, and a strong industrial base consisting of manufacturing, logistics, energy production, and distribution facilities make the county a critical transportation and economic hub for the region. Deputies routinely respond to incidents ranging from rural policing and community engagement to complex criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, and interstate interdiction efforts.
The Grundy County Sheriff's Office is committed to professional development and provides deputies with opportunities to expand their skills throughout their careers. In addition to patrol operations, deputies may pursue assignments in specialized units that support both the Sheriff's Office and partner agencies throughout the county.
Currently, under the direction of Sheriff Ken Briley, the Sheriff’s Office employs 15 Correctional Officers, one part-time civil process server, 13 part-time bailiffs, and 31 full-time sworn law enforcement officers with full arrest powers. Of those 31 full-time sworn law enforcement officers, 20 uniformed Deputies actively work the streets of Grundy County, along with four K-9 units.

Hiring Process:
1. Take Exams through NTN and complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) 2. Upload required documents. If requesting preference points, contact climbach@grundycountyil.org 3. Interview with the Merit Commission for possible placement on the eligibility list.
Once an opening occurs and before a conditional offer, the candidate must successfully pass a: 1. polygraph 2. medical exam 3. background check 4. drug test
Once all requirements are met, final approval is considered by the Merit Commission and Sheriff's Department.
Those who have met the above may be placed on a Preliminary Deputy Eligibility List, which is valid for up to two years from the date of certification.
The Sheriff’s Office will then use this list to fill Deputy openings.
