Job Title: Firefighter

*ALL CANDIDATES MSUT have the certifications below to be considered for position:

Fire Certification and EMT or Paramedic

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

General Summary:

Wearing SCBA equipment and approved protective clothing, the Firefighter performs active firefighting to include entering burning buildings to rescue victims, advancing charged hose lines into burning structures or areas, combating fire using a variety of fire service tools and equipment; Climbs ground ladders or aerial carrying firefighting or rescue equipment to areas above ground and effects firefighting or rescue from that elevation; Extinguishes all fires as directed (vehicle fires, rubbish fires, brush fires, etc.); Rescues victims of crashes, structural collapses, floods and other hazardous conditions; Provides EMS transport/assistance to residents, non-residents and fellow employees; Drives all Fire Department vehicles.

Essential Job Functions:

A fighter engages in all aspects of firefighting, victim rescue and the administering of emergency medical assistance.
Required to clean, maintain, and operate all firefighting tools and equipment, including power tools and rolling equipment (vehicles)
Responsible for the cleaning and general maintenance of the working and living areas of his assigned duty station, he reports directly to the Fire Lieutenant
The firefighter utilizes protective firefighting clothing, firefighting hand tools, power tools and hose lines, nozzles, SCBA equipment, thermal imaging devices, carbon monoxide monitors and cell phones.
May be assigned to either fire station.
Works a 24-hour shift.

Qualifications:

Ability to complete the 240-hour state-mandated Fire Cadet course and obtain state certification as a Firefighter I and II with a passing score on the Tri-C Agility Test.
Ability to complete the state-certification requirements for EMT-P and become certified as an EMT-P by the State of Ohio.
Must be ability to read and comprehend fire service instructional manuals and textbooks.
Must have the physical skills necessary (strength, stamina, and endurance) necessary to carry out the demanding physical tasks of the position.
Candidates must meet the application standards established by the Civil Service Commission for the competitive examination for "entry level firefighter" This examination may include a written test, an agility test, and an oral interview. Successful completion of this test establishes eligibility for appointment. Processing of the appointment eligibility list may include drug testing, criminal background checks, medical examinations, character reference background checks, prior employment checks, a polygraph or voice analysis examination or other components as determined by the Civil Service Commission or the appointing authority.
Candidates must be 17 years of age at the final date for filing an application to make the entrance examination and must be 18 years of age for appointment as an entry level firefighter.
Candidates must also be citizens of the United States and residents of the State of Ohio.
Must have a valid Ohio driver's license.

Equipment Used:

Fire trucks, nozzles, SBCA equipment, Hand Tools, AED devices, PVE's, Multi gas monitors, thermal imaging devices.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: OFFICE

The employee may be exposed to and work in a multi-stimuli office environment with open doors, equipment noise, with frequent interruptions by employees. Works indoors in a temperature-controlled environment.
