Position Title: Correctional Officer
Salary Information: $59,208.24 beginning December 1, 2025 for entry-level Corrections position
Benefit Information:

Sick Time is acquired at one day per month and cannot be used until after the employee has completed the 12 month probationary period.
Vacation time is earned at 84 hours (two weeks) after one year of employment and increases as various year designations per collection bargaining unit.

Department Overview

The Grundy County Sheriff's Office takes pride in our agency and the communities in Grundy County.

The mission of the Grundy County Jail is to provide exemplary service and protection to the residents and visitors of Grundy County, ensure the care and custody of prisoners in confinement, maintain the security of the courts, and provide law enforcement services to the community. The jail's operations are also guided by the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) mission to serve justice and increase public safety by promoting positive change in offender behavior and reducing victimization.

Our correctional officers serve with integrity, receive exemplary training, and participate in all operations within the corrections division.

The Grundy County Jail provides for the custody of individuals awaiting trial, serving sentences up to (1) year or those sentenced to periodic imprisonment.

65 bed facility
Correctional Officers are responsible for the care, custody, security, and control of persons in custody.
Do walk through open pods every 20 minutes, transport persons in custody to and from court, medical facilities, and perform warrant pickups.
Two 12 hour shift rotations: 7AM-7PM and 7PM-7AM with annual shift bidding
No residency requirement to be employed as a Correctional Officers
Overtime and mandated/forced overtime is outlined in the collective bargaining agreement through equalization overtime distributed among staff. Overtime is available but not guaranteed when fully staffed.

Grundy County encompasses 432 square miles. Although it is small compared to many other counties, it is one of Illinois' most important commercial and agricultural counties. With two major interstates; I-55 and I-80, and the Illinois River, travel and transportation through the county is abundant. The Illinois River, along with other connecting streams, gives Grundy County approximately 45 miles of waterway. The Illinois and Michigan canals flow through the county seat of Morris, adjacent to the Illinois River.

Currently, under the direction of Sheriff Ken Briley, the Sheriff’s Office employs 15 Correctional Officers, one part-time civil process server, 13 part-time bailiffs, and 31 full-time sworn law enforcement officers with full arrest powers. Of those 31 full-time sworn law enforcement officers, 20 uniformed Deputies actively work the streets of Grundy County, along with four K-9 units.

Minimum Requirements for Hire:

Must be a United States Citizen;
Must be 18 at time of hire;
Not have a Felony Conviction from any jurisdiction;
Possess a valid drivers license;
Complete a Waiver of Liability, Waiver of Confidentiality of Medical Records with medical permission one week prior to the physical agility exam;
Pass the P.O.W.E.R test (Police Officer Wellness Evaluation Report);
Pass the required written tests with a minimum score of 70%;
High School Diploma or GED;
Be available for an interview with the Merit Commission;
Be available for a detailed investigation of background, reputation and character;
Be of good moral character, of temperate habits, of sound health and must be physically able to perform the duties of the position applied for;
Shall furnish a copy of DD214, Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, High School Diploma or G.E.D., copy of College Degree or, if requested, a copy of certified transcript of course work from an accredited College or University

Hiring Process:

1. Take Exams through NTN and complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ)
2. Upload required documents. If requesting preference points, contact climbach@grundycountyil.org
3. Interview with the Merit Commission for possible placement on the eligibility list.

Once an opening occurs and before a conditional offer, the candidate must successfully pass a:
1. polygraph
2. medical exam
3. background check
4. drug test

Once all requirements are met, final approval is considered by the Merit Commission and Sheriff's Department.

Those who have met the above may be placed on a Preliminary Correctional Officer Eligibility List, which is valid for up to two years from the date of certification.

The Sheriff’s Office will then use this list to fill Correctional Officer openings. In order to be considered for a conditional offer of employment, the following must be met:

· Must pass the Illinois P.O.W.E.R. test (this Pre-Employment Condition is not required at the time of application)

· Pass a psychological examination, medical physical, drug screening, and, if required, a polygraph examination

· Pass a detailed background examination
