The City of Oregon is building an eligibility list for vacancies within the next year. To be considered on this eligibility list all testing must be completed by August 29th, 2025.
Candidates are required to complete the following to move forward in the hiring process:
- Must successfully pass Firefighter Mile prior to time of application
- Pass FireTEAM National Testing Network written exam with a score of 70% or above
- Personal History Questionnaire through your NTN candidate account
- Must complete the PSSA section within your NTN candidate account

Salary Information: Salary is based upon negotiations with the Full-Time Oregon Professional Firefighters IAFF Local Union 4093. Ranges as of July 1, 2025, are as follows:
Full-Time Firefighter 1 (EMT): Full-Time Firefighter 2 (Paramedic)
Step 1 – Step 6: $60,946 - $74,340 per year Step 1 – Step 6: $74,353 - $94,916

Department Overview: The Oregon Fire Rescue Department (OFRD) is a combination department that has transitioned into a primarily staffed model replacing the paid per call response model of the past. A 21,000 square foot, state-of-the-art, central Fire Station was built in 2023. OFRD is a progressive, motivated, well-equipped department that is active in the community. OFRD responds to an average of 3,900 incidents annually providing ALS/BLS transport service as well as all fire and rescue services. OFRD is the host of a regional training center in partnership with 3 local industries that provides members with many training opportunities.
City Information: The City of Oregon is a growing community and the second largest city in Lucas County. Our community spans 28 square miles and is an industrial suburb of Toledo. The City sits on the shores of Lake Erie’s western basin which provides an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities for our citizens and visitors. Those opportunities are only enhanced by Pearson Metro Park which is part of the Lucas County Metro Parks system and Maumee Bay State Park, both of which offer large areas of outdoor recreation or lodging. Job Requirements:
Age: Must be 18 years of age and less than 41 years of age at original appointment (per ORC124.42). Applicants over 41 years of age that currently participate in the Ohio Police & Fire Pension may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Firefighter 1 (EMT) Performance Responsibilities: Under direction of the Fire Chief, this position is responsible for performing a variety of duties related to firefighting, fire prevention and medical treatment. A Firefighter 1 (EMT) must be able to work with a wide range of tools and equipment and must be able to learn technical material about firefighting EMT methods.
Firefighter 2 (Paramedic) Performance Responsibilities: Under supervision of the Fire Chief shall perform a wide variety of duties related to and including paramedic/firefighting. Candidates must be able to work with a wide range of tools and equipment and must be able to learn technical material about paramedic/firefighting methods, fire prevention, and medical treatment. Shall possess ability to perform labor and services of the character required by the operation of the Division of Fire of the City of Oregon, Ohio.
Motor Vehicle Driving Record: If you have any convictions of the following within a three-year period of application, you are not insurable under the city’s risk management program, and thus not eligible for a firefighter position:
- Three moving violations
- Two at-fault accidents
- Combination of two or more moving violations and one at-fault accident
- OVI for drugs or alcohol
- Refusal to submit to blood alcohol or breathalyzer test
- Reckless operation
- Driving while under suspension
- Felony violation involving a motor vehicle
- Leaving scene of accident
- Fleeing or eluding a police officer
- Expired license
Firefighter 1 (EMT): Necessary Certifications at Application: (Certification copies are required at time of application)
- Current State of Ohio EMT-Basic Certification
- AHA Health Care Provider Certification
- Current State of Ohio Firefighter I Certification
Firefighter 1 (EMT): Necessary Certification Within First Year of Employment:
- State of Ohio Firefighter II Certification
Firefighter 2 (Paramedic): Necessary Certifications at Application: (Certification copies are required at time of application)
- Current State of Ohio Paramedic Certification
- AHA ACLS Certification
- Current State of Ohio Firefighter II Certification
Medical/Physical Examination: Candidates who successfully complete the written test and Firefighter mile and are selected for employment must pass the Medical/Physical exam in accordance with the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund.

Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: No person shall be eligible for appointment who has been convicted of felony, theft, or any other crime that may, in the view of the Civil Service Commission, compromise public trust. All applicants must pass a background check to make this determination.
Veterans’ Preference:
a) A veteran who receives a passing grade on this competitive entry level examination shall have five (5) numerical points added to his/her passing score. Veteran is defined as a person who served in the Armed Forces on active duty for a period of more than 180 consecutive days and who received an honorable discharge or release or was separated under honorable conditions.
b) A disabled veteran who satisfies any physical requirements for the position and receives a passing grade on this competitive entry level examination, shall have an additional five (5) numerical points added to his/her passing score. Disabled veteran means a person who has served on active duty in the Armed Forces, has been separated under honorable conditions, and has established the present existence of a service-connected disability rated ten percent (10%) or more.
Prior Experience: Candidates who are currently employed by the City of Oregon Fire Division and covered by the OPTFA bargaining unit shall have bonus points added to their passing written test score as outlined in the current collective bargaining agreement.
Lateral Transfers:
The City may hire lateral transfers for the positions of either Firefighter 1 or Firefighter 2. The City may assign the laterally transferred firefighter to a wage rate grade and step based upon their time in service as a Full-Time firefighter/paramedic with another employer; this will match their “pension” years of service.
This will apply ONLY to service recognized under a State Fire Pension.
Termination of service from a former Fire Service employer will not qualify for lateral transfer.
This WILL NOT be extended for purposes of seniority or vacation beyond step 1 (76 hrs).
Vacation Time for Transfer
Vacation time will be provided to new lateral transfer employees hired to OFRD. This vacation time will be prorated to the time of their starting date on shift, to the end of the calendar year (December 31st). This time will be “front loaded” and available for the new hire to schedule on the shift calendar.
This vacation time MUST be scheduled and taken. It cannot be carried over into the next calendar year; nor can it be paid out in wages.
Lateral Transfer candidates are required to take and pass the written test through the National Testing Network as well as successfully complete the Firefighter Mile.
