---ATTENTION---

The City of Perrysburg Civil Service Commission will be establishing a list of candidates for the position of Patrol Officer (Entry Level) for the City of Perrysburg Police Division. The written test and PHQ will be administered through National Testing Network (NTN) at www.nationaltestingnetwork.com. Please visit NTN's website for additional information and to register for testing dates. Candidates that are not OPOTA certified, or Ohio State Highway Patrol Basic Training certified, must attend and successfully complete an Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy selected by the Chief of Police.

Candidates who have tested with NTN in the last year and still have valid scores will need to apply their scores to our current NTN posting to be considered.

Honorably discharged military veterans who submit a legible copy of their DD214 will be given an additional 5% of their passing score. Summary of Duties
Under the direct supervision of a Sergeant, a Police Officer patrols a designated area ensuring compliance with all applicable State Laws and City Ordinances; answers calls when a crime is suspected or an emergency exists; takes such actions as are necessary to prevent crime, to apprehend criminals, to maintain safety, to assist citizens in a wide range of emergency and non-emergency situations; and performs other related duties, tasks, and assignments as required and directed by a Sergeant, the Lieutenant, the Deputy Chief, or the Chief of Police. Additional guidance is provided by the Division's Policies and Procedures, Rules and Regulations, written directives and memos, City Administrative Policies, and applicable Federal, State and Local Laws. Officers are required to take a problem-solving approach to the situations they encounter on a day-to-day basis and to interact with the public on a regular basis to address any relevant concerns.

Police Officers are subject to working varied hours, holidays, and overtime as required during assigned shifts and will be subject to emergency call-ins for critical incidents or other situations requiring emergency or additional police staffing

Example of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

Drives a police vehicle, patrolling an assigned area.
Reports unsafe conditions, such as obstructions in streets.
Issues citations for violations of traffic laws.
Makes arrests for criminal law violations, sometimes requiring the use of physical effort.
Transports prisoners.
Investigates traffic accidents, determining conditions, causes and other pertinent facts regarding accident.
Conducts investigations of crimes, preserves crime scenes, gathers and preserves evidence.
Checks doors and windows of homes and businesses for security.
Testifies in court.
Answers inquiries; assists stranded motorists.
Looks for and investigates conditions or situations which may indicate a crime is about to be, or has been, committed.
Creates and maintains records and prepares reports of incidents and activities.
Takes statements from victims, witnesses and suspects.
Secures arrests and search warrants as required.
Where juveniles are involved, conducts interviews, recommends charges where applicable, appears in court, and works with school authorities.
Directs and regulates traffic.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate authority.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: An example of acceptable qualifications:

High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent certificate.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Upon successful completion of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy, maintain OPOTC Peace Officer Certificate as a condition of continued employment with the Police Division.
Ability to acquire and maintain certification (pursuant to state standards) for the operation of on-duty and off-duty firearms (i.e. Police Shotgun, Patrol Rifle, and assigned duty handgun).
Minimum of 21 years of age at time of appointment.
Possession of a valid Driver's License and be eligible for coverage under the City's vehicle insurance provider
Must be eligible to legally work in the United States.
Background must be free of prior felony convictions.
Regular and punctual attendance is regarded as an essential requirement of this classification.
Adherence to all applicable Federal and State safety laws, rules, and regulations and City safety policies/procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to meet such physical requirements as may be established by competent authority, including mobility, dexterity, endurance and strength requirements.
Ability to walk and stand on a regular basis, sometimes for extended periods at a time.
Ability to sit for extended periods at a time, for such functions as patrol, training and meetings.
Must be physically capable of successfully performing essential job functions of the Police Officer classification and be free of medical conditions that would preclude one from successfully performing said functions or would pose a direct threat to the health or safety of oneself or others.
Ability to operate various motor vehicles and equipment in a safe, effective, and responsible manner in a variety of situations and conditions.
Ability to work safely and effectively in all types of weather conditions and under all types of adverse, life threatening situations.
Ability to use firearms, handcuffs, police batons, flashlights, spotlights, radar/laser units, and other regular and special police equipment in an appropriate, safe, and effective manner.

Supplemental Information

Applicants must successfully complete the following additional requirements in order to be considered for employment:
1. A physical ability test (dates and times announced once determined--see below for testing procedure);
2. A background investigation and assessment;
3. A structured oral interview;
4. A medical examination and drug screen;
5. A psychological evaluation.

Physical Ability Testing Procedure:
Phase 1. The candidate will exit from the driver’s seat of a patrol vehicle and run 300 feet (100 yards). The time clock will be started when the candidate opens the driver’s door. The candidate will need to stay on the pavement or stone path while running. If he/she enters the grass while running, then the candidate will be disqualified. Proceed to Phase 2.
Phase 2. The candidate will climb up five steps and move approximately 75 feet in the prescribed direction and descend down five steps. The candidate is required to step on all five steps while climbing and descending, if the candidate fails to do so, then he/she will be disqualified. Proceed to Phase 3.
Phase 3. The candidate will move approximately 75 feet to the next obstacle and jump over a box that is approximately 18H”x12W”x36L. Proceed to Phase 4.
Phase 4. The candidate will move approximately 75 feet to the next phase and load six inert rounds into each of two pistol magazines for a total of 12 rounds. The candidate will charge the duty weapon with one magazine and pull the trigger six times with the dominant hand, the candidate will then perform a magazine reload, charge the duty weapon again and pull the trigger six times with the non-dominant hand. If the candidate fails to utilize both the dominant and non-dominant hand as instructed for this phase, he/she will be disqualified. Proceed to Phase 5.
Phase 5. The candidate will move approximately 75 feet to the next phase and will open the driver’s door and push the power door lock/unlock switch to unlock the rear doors, the candidate will then move to the right rear door of the police cruiser and remove the 165 lb dummy from the right rear seat of the cruiser and drag the entire dummy 15 feet away from the cruiser, in the prescribed direction, across a line marked on the ground. Proceed to Phase 6.
Phase 6. The candidate will move to the rear of the police vehicle and push the disabled vehicle approximately 20 feet. The rear bumper will need to cross the line marked on the ground. Proceed to Phase 7.
Phase 7. The candidate will re-enter the police vehicle's driver’s seat and put the vehicle's transmission shift lever into Park, remove the ignition and handcuff key and unlock a set of handcuffs from the steering wheel. The candidate will raise his/her hands to stop the clock. End of the Physical Ability Test.
