Position Title: Firefighter
The Sycamore Fire Department is accepting applications for Firefighter with 3 immediate openings. Candidates are required to complete NTN's FireTEAM exam and Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) between 12:01 a.m. on December 19, 2025, and 11:59 p.m. on January 30, 2026.

Current Salary Information: $73,290 - $99,230 - Final salary range will be determined through ongoing union negotiations.

Department Overview: Sycamore Fire Department operates out of two fire stations. We expect to occupy our new station that will replace our old main station in Q1 2026. This station will be part of a larger “Educational Complex” made up of a nature trail across the street from the station, as well as our Safety Town that will be part of our fire station property. The new station will provide more opportunities for “in-house” training, public education opportunities through the adjacent Safety Town, as well as involvement with the community with the new training/community room being designed.
Sycamore Fire is made up of 32 sworn personnel that includes 30 union firefighters and one Fire Chief and one Deputy Fire Chief. The department also operates an Apprentice Program consisting of six sworn apprentices. This is a very busy fire department that runs about 3,000 calls per year. 85% are EMS calls and 15% are structure fires or other calls. Sycamore also has mutual aid agreements with 11 other communities in DeKalb County.

City Information: The City of Sycamore is located 60 miles west of Chicago and 30 miles southeast of Rockford. The City encompasses approximately 10 square miles and is the county seat of DeKalb County. Sycamore has a vibrant downtown business district, a stretch of historic homes, and continued growth in housing starts. Sycamore hosts over 25 special events including an annual car show, street dances, food festivals, and Pumpkin Fest which draws tens of thousands during a weeklong festival culminating in a 10K run and parade. You will feel at home in this close-knit city that prizes its fire department and supports its members in serving the community as well as a 64 square mile fire protection district.

Firefighter/Paramedic Minimum Requirements:
· U.S. Citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S. (Must meet I-9 requirements)
· High School Diploma or Equivalent
· Valid Driver’s License (valid Illinois Driver’s License at time of hire)
· 21 to under 35 years of age at time of hire, per Sycamore Fire and Police Commission Rules
· Proof of completion of Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Ladder Climb Test within 12 months prior to the date of grace period deadline (valid if dated 2/08/2025 – 2/08/2026).
· Certified Illinois Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Basic Operations Firefighter at time of hire. (OSFM BOF not required if fully licensed by Illinois Department of Public Health Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic; IPDH EMT – P).
· Licensed Illinois Department of Public Health Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (IDPH EMT-P) at time of application deadline OR OSFM BOF with proof of current enrollment in an accredited paramedic training program approved by the IDPH by submitting a current letter of good standing from the program.
· Must reside within 30 miles of the intersection of State & Main Street, Sycamore, IL within 6 months of hire.
Hiring Process: Written test through National Testing Network, polygraph, background investigation, oral examination, medical exam, stress test, drug screening, and psychological examination.
Testing Process for Applicants:
1. Take and/or submit an existing test score from the FireTEAM examination through the National Testing Network by visiting the NTN website. Test must be completed and/or submitted between December 19, 2025 and January 30, 2026.
2. Ensure you complete a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Ladder Climb Test and submit proof dated no more than 12 months prior to the closing of the current application period. (Card cannot be dated earlier than February 8, 2025)
3. Written request for preference points:

· Copy of Driver’s License
· Proof of CPAT and Ladder Climb Test – Dated no earlier that February 8, 2025
· Birth Certificate

· Proof of EMT-P certification or enrollment in an accredited paramedic training program approved by the IDPH by submitting a current letter of good standing from the program

For the application to be complete, all documents must be received no later than February 8, 2026
