Position Title: Fire Medic
Application Requirements and Process
The City of Bedford Civil Service Commission will be establishing a list of candidates for the position of Fire Medic for the City of Bedford Fire Department.
The written test will be administered through the National Testing Network (NTN) at www.nationaltestingnetwork.com.
How to Apply Through NTN
- Take the Firefighter - Fire TEAM exam.
- Upload a copy of driver’s license.
- Upload a copy of High School Diploma or GED.
- Complete Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA).
- Complete Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ).
Requirements to Be Completed By Appointment Date
- Candidates must hold a current State of Ohio Paramedic (or National Registry). Provide a copy of the Paramedic certificate.
- Candidates must hold a current Firefighter II certification. Provide a copy of Firefighter II certificate earned upon completion of the requisite firefighter training course.
- Candidates must complete the Firefighters Physical Agility Test from Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) or other facility that offers the same Firefighter’s Agility Test with a passing time of four minutes and thirty seconds. (Certification must be less than 12 months old at time of appointment.) Provide a copy of an official Certificate of Completion that shows the completion time.
The City of Bedford Civil Service Commission will be awarding additional points for the following:
- Certified Ohio Firefighter I & II school certificate - Pursuant to Provisions of ORC Chapter 4765.11. (5 points)
- Tri-C Firefighter Physical Agility test within the last three years with a time of 3:30 or less. (2 points)
- Bachelor’s Degree (2 points) or Associates Degree (1 point) transcript or certificate of degree at time of filing. (Capped at 2 points)
- Military Service (2 points). Copy of DD214 form with honorable discharge and re-entry eligibility code that reflects this status.
- Residency. Candidate living within the City of Bedford at least six months prior to the written exam deadline. (1 Point)
All candidates must provide copies of the above transcripts, certificates, and proof of residency to receive additional points.

Salary Information: The salary for new Fire Medics is $72,559. The starting salary for experienced Fire Medics is commensurate with years of full-time equivalent service. The salary includes six-month step increases until the maximum salary of $86,661 at three years. Candidates with three years or more of experience start at the top salary.

Department Overview
The Bedford Fire Department proudly serves the City of Bedford’s 13,000 residents with 24/7 fire protection and emergency medical services. Staffing consists of 27 full-time sworn members who are state certified firefighters and paramedics. The department is comprised of the Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, six Lieutenants, and twenty-one Firefighters who operate out of a single station. The department responds to an average of 3,400 calls for service annually with an engine, ladder and two ALS squads. We are seeking highly motivated individuals who enjoy a fast-paced environment where their skills will be used frequently.
The Bedford Fire Department has a strong auto aid program with neighboring communities and participates in regional collaboration. Members hold assignments in several specialized units including the Chagrin/Southeast Haz Mat, EastTech Technical Rescue, and Southeast Area Law Enforcement (SEALE) Swat Medic programs.
The department responds to a variety of hazards in residential, commercial, and industrial facilities. Additionally, the department responds to incidents on the freeway, in metro parks, and on the railroad.

Required Certifications: Candidates must be a certified paramedic (State of Ohio or National Registry) and State of Ohio Firefighter Level II by the appointment date.
Prior Experience: Not required, but pay rate may vary depending on experience. See Prior Experience Incentives below.
Physical Agility: Candidates must provide proof of the Firefighters Physical Agility Test from Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) or other facility that offers the same Firefighter’s Agility Test-passing time of four minutes and thirty seconds. (Certification must be less than 12 months old at time of appointment.)
Hiring Process: Candidates are required to take the entrance exam through NTN. Additionally, the candidate will be required to successfully complete an extensive background check, physical agility testing, polygraph, at least one panel interview, psychological test, drug testing and medical physical.
Prior Experience Incentives: Amount of prior experience would dictate starting pay rate to align with new Fire Medic six-month step increases.
