PATROL OFFICER (Lateral)

Salary Range
$4,917 - $6,275 Monthly
plus incentives
The Talent Police Department is hiring for Police Officer (Lateral) ! Prior Experience is required to apply as a lateral candidate. This is an open recruitment (until position is filled).

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
A police officer is charged with the responsibility of fulfilling the police mission of protecting life, property, and preserving order; prevents and represses crime through patrol and investigative activities; enforces city ordinances, state, and federal laws; apprehends offenders and secures compliance in lesser non-criminal matters; performs other related activities in assisting the public; performs other duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform all duties consistent with the best interests of public safety
- Maintain impeccable integrity
- Work assigned day, evening, or night shifts in any weather
- Work overtime assignments as required
- Operate police department equipment such as firearms, patrol vehicles, radio equipment, speed measurement equipment, and any other assigned equipment
- Patrol all areas of the City, properly responding to calls for service and taking appropriate action(s) for the incidents that have occurred or conditions that have been observed
- Respond to callouts from off duty status as required
- Make timely and thorough investigations of all reports made to the police department during assigned shift or as assigned by a supervisor
- Identify and protect crime scenes; safeguard, collect and process evidence and other property consistent with training and department policy
- Prepare accurate and detailed written reports
- Make arrests as necessary and consistent with the law, training, and department policies
- Use force as necessary and consistent with the law, training, and department policies
- Perform traffic violation prevention and enforcement and respond to and investigate traffic accidents
- Give required testimony in various types of hearing and trials
- Participate in department training and out of the area training as required
- Develop specialized skills and knowledge as required
- Become familiar with and remain up-dated on applicable federal and state laws and local ordinances and be able to interpret and apply them to incidents reported and/or observed
- Know and comply with all applicable department policies, procedures, rules, and directives
- Coordinate with community partners to identify root causes of crime and quality of life detractors in the community; assist in designing and implementing solutions to those identified problems
- Although supervision is not normally a responsibility of positions in this classification, officer may be requested to provide work guidance and/or training to new officers
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS AND/OR PREFERENCES:
- This is a Lateral Police Officer recruitment for those who are currently certified as a law enforcement officer.
- Must currently be certified through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards, and Training (DPSST) or the equivalent certification through your state.
- Out of state lateral candidates are subject to DPSST approval to bypass Oregon DPSST Academy attendance.
- You must attach your Police Officer Certification to your application to meet this standard. Application under this standard would mean your probationary period with Talent PD would be 12 months after hire.
- Lapsed police officer certification is allowed provided you are eligible for reinstatement per Oregon DPSSST standards. You must attach a copy of your DPSST IRIS Snapshot to meet this standard.
- 24 months experience working as a law enforcement officer is preferred however candidates experience can be reviewed should they meet all the other requirements
- Applicants must have successfully completed the probation period of their current agency.
JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Prior law enforcement experience required
- Must be a citizen of the United States or a nonimmigrant legally admitted to the United States under a Compact of Free Association within 18 months of hire date.
- Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate
- Must have or be able to obtain by the time of appointment an Oregon Driver’s license
- Must be able to read and speak the English language
- Possess and maintain a valid Oregon class C Driver’s license or other state equivalent and have a driving record that meets the City of Talent’s standards.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- No felony criminal record

- Must be proficient in verbal communications and listening skills
- Must have and maintain acceptable driving record
- Ability to pass pre-assessment suitability screening
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation
- Ability to pass a medical and psychological examinations IAW DPSST standards
- Ability to pass a drug screen
