Classification: Firefighter/Paramedic

Applicants are required to complete FireTEAM testing and obtain a valid NTN-issued CPAT through NTN, unless eligible for the experienced Firefither/Paramedic exemption described below:

Candidates who are currently employed or have been employed within the preceding 12 months as a full-time career Firefighter/Paramedic with a professional fire-rescue agency may be exempt from the NTN FireTEAM and CPAT requirements upon verification of qualifying employment and required cetifications.

All applicants must submit a Town of Longboat Key employement application and meet the minimum qualifications and applicable Fire Rescue selection requirements to be considered for employment.

Competitive Benefits include:

· Firefighter/Paramedic starting annual salary of $63,797 - $99,432. Possibility of starting salary higher depending on experience and training.

Responding to over 2,000 calls for service annually, Longboat Key Fire Rescue is a small progressive Fire/EMS ALS-Transport department with 38 employees, located on a barrier island in Southwest Florida. Two fire stations protect 4.26 square miles of land and an additional 17 square miles of surrounding water areas. Personnel works the following: shift duty comprised of 24-hour on/48-hour off. Each shift includes a Shift Commander, 2 Lieutenants, and 8 Firefighter/Paramedics.

Longboat Key is a barrier island community located on Florida's west coast. The northern portion of Longboat Key is in Manatee County and the southern portion is in Sarasota County. Our neighboring inland communities are Bradenton and Sarasota, Florida. The island is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico on the west and Sarasota Bay on the east. The area is popular among retirees and is also a popular resort and second-home community. We serve a population of 8,000 permanent residents and 20,000 during peak, tourist season.

Job Requirements

Licenses and Certifications Required :

Valid Florida State Driver’s License, Class E endorsement
Valid State of Florida Firefighter Certification of Compliance/Minimum Standards
Valid State of Florida Paramedic Certification
Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (EVOC) - 16 hours
Valid BLS Card
Valid ACLS Card

Essential Functions:

Under the direction of the Fire Chief and the supervision of the Station Officer, responsible for the protection of life and property through the combating, extinguishing, and preventing of fires.
This is skilled, specialized work of varied difficulty in preventing, suppressing and extinguishing fires; performing rescue and emergency medical services and/or performing special assignment duties in support of fire-rescue operations.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities :
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of basic firefighting curriculum and skills.
- Responds to alarms and performs duties on the alarm scene as well as in the station as assigned and supervised by the officer in charge.
- Directly responsible to the medical control hospital on the scene of a medical emergency.
- Performs Paramedic skills and procedures in emergency situations, as applicable under Florida statues.
- Ensures protective gear clothing, tools, and apparatus are in proper working order.
- Report to work as required by the Disaster Plan Recovery Guide and regular attendance during normal work schedule other than excused or work-related absences.

- Attend Pump Operations and Hydraulic class provided by department as well as any mandatory training.
- Performs Annual Fire Inspections and Pre-plan Assignments.
- Shall be familiar and obey the Town Personnel Rules and Regulations as well as departmental General Orders and Directives.
- Ability to operate fire/rescue apparatus and marine craft.
- Ability to read, write and interpret English.
- Ability to speak, interpret and convey effectively in English.
- Must be able to successfully negotiate the basic training program as conducted by the Training Division of the Department during the 1-year probationary period.
- Any other functions deemed essential by the Town and communicated to the employee by his/her supervisor or department head.

- Must be able to successfully negotiate the basic training program as conducted by the department including but not limited to a successful completion of the Paramedic Field Training Program.
- Hepatitis B vaccination, proof of same, or signed Acknowledgement declining the vaccination, must be provided prior to assuming Town duties.
- The Town is a Drug Free Workplace, in compliance with the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, in § 440.102, FS and Rules 59A-24 F.A.C (Florida Administrative Code). State and federal laws and regulations may subject certain employees to additional drug testing requirements. Any employee who violates the program is subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.
- Candidate must successfully complete (pass): swim 100 yards (untimed), tread water for five (5) minutes, EMS Scenario.
Disqualifiers:
Conviction of a felony or a conviction of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude.
Drug use (pre-employment testing required).
Driving record (driving record background check completed).
Must successfully complete pre-employment physical exam and NCIC (National Criminal Information Center) background check.
Applicants must not have used any form of tobacco products for one year prior to the date of hire.
