Position Title: FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC

The City of Fountain Valley is currently accepting applications for Firefighter/Paramedic. All applicants must complete and submit an employment application by visiting the City’s website at www.fountainvalley.gov/261/Employment-Opportunities. All required certifications/licenses MUST be submitted with the completed employment application. All applicants must take the FireTEAM test though the National Testing Network. Lateral candidates are waived from the FireTEAM exam and CPAT. Applicants must provide proof that they have successfully completed a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or Biddle Physical Ability Test (PAT) within the last 12 months.

Recruitment will close Sunday, March 1, 2025 at 11:59 p.m.

Salary Information: $100,959.04 – $122,711.68 ANNUALLY

The 46 dedicated professionals of the Fire Department strive to deliver high quality paramedic and rescue, fire suppression, fire prevention, public safety and education and emergency preparedness programs to the community. The Fire Department operates from two fire stations staffed by two advanced life support engine companies, one advanced life support truck company and one battalion commander operating 24 hours a day collectively responding annually to approximately 8,500 all-risk emergency responses.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Academy Graduate
Candidates may apply for the Firefighter Paramedic position if they have graduated from a California State Board of Fire Service Approved fire Academy or equivalent Fire Academy or have their California State Certified Firefighter I AND possess a Paramedic License.

Academy Graduate/Attending Paramedic School
Candidates may apply for the Firefighter Paramedic position if they have graduated from a California State Board of Fire Service Approved Fire Academy AND are currently in a field internship portion of a California State Licensed Paramedic School and will possess a Paramedic License by appointment date.

EDUCATION:
High School graduation or equivalent or possession of a General Education Development Test (GED) certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE:
Previous experience working as a full-time paid firefighter in a municipal Fire Department is highly desirable.

REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:

A valid California Class "A, B or C" Driver's License is required at time of appointment. A Firefighter endorsement must be obtained during the probationary period and maintained throughout employment.
Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Possession of a California State Certified Firefighter 1 or graduation from a California State Board of Fire Service Approved Fire Academy or equivalent Fire Academy is required.
Possession of a valid California Paramedic License is required by appointment date.
Possession of a current Orange County Paramedic Accreditation is required prior to the completion of the Employees Orientation Academy.
Proof of completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or Biddle Physical Ability Test (PAT) within the last 12 months.

The first 100 completed employment applications submitted online to the City of Fountain Valley that have also completed the NTN written exam by the filing deadline will be reviewed to be considered for advancement.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Possession of a California State Certified Firefighter 1, or graduation from a California State Board of Fire Service Approved Fire Academy (or equivalent Fire Academy) is required.
Possession of a valid California Paramedic License is required at time of application.
Experience working as a Firefighter in a municipal setting.
Possession of a current Orange County Paramedic Accreditation is required prior to the completion of the Employee's Orientation Academy.
A valid California Class "A, B or C" Driver's License is required at time of appointment. A Firefighter endorsement must be obtained during the probationary period and maintained throughout employment.

SELECTION PROCESS:

APPLICATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REVIEW: A review of each application and required licenses/certifications will be conducted.
ORAL INTERVIEW: (Weighted 60%) Evaluates the candidate's experience, training, and qualifications that are essential for successful performance on the job.
PARAMEDIC SKILLS ASSESSMENT: (Weighted 40%) Evaluates the candidate’s knowledge of pre-hospital medicine as it relates to the National Registry standard.

INTERVIEW/ASSESSMENT DATES: The oral interview and paramedic skills assessment are tentatively scheduled for Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

RESULTS: Results of the testing process will be used to establish an Eligibility list which will be valid until exhausted or a maximum of one year.
