Job Classification: Police Officer
The City of Westerville is currently accepting test results for entry-level police officers. Candidates must take the NTN exam and Public Safety Self-Assessment (Part I & II) in order to be considered. The department requires the candidate to take Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) Parts 1 & 2. You can access these through your candidate account. NTN suggests completing the PSSA as soon as possible so there is no delay in your process.
If you have taken the NTN test previously and your scores are still valid, please contact NTN to send your scores to Westerville. You must contact NTN to transfer your scores.
The City does not require a PAT (Physical Abilities Test) through the National Testing Network. PAT testing will take place during the recruitment process through the City of Westerville.

An applicant’s participation in the selection process is voluntary, and an applicant may withdraw at any time from employment consideration. Applicants should be aware that any information obtained and documented during the background investigations and selection process becomes a public record and must be disclosed by the City if requested as part of a public records request.
Failure by an applicant to enumerate or disclose any offense or information does not exclude such offense or information from being considered or a basis of disqualification. Any criminal offense, quasi-criminal offense (i.e. municipal ordinance violation), or other relevant material discovered under the proper circumstances through the background investigation can be considered by the Division in evaluating the applicant’s qualifications. The Division may disqualify the applicant from consideration for employment or continued employment if the Division determines that any acts or omissions of the applicant discovered by the Division are of such a nature as to be inconsistent with the Division’s Standards for Employment.
Below is a listing of factors that may lead to disqualification, and/or result in immediate disqualification, of an applicant from consideration for employment, however, the Division of Police at all times retains the discretion to consider any other factors in addition to those listed below when evaluating whether an applicant meets the Division’s Standards for Employment. A. Honesty/Falsification (ORC Chapter 2921) – Applicants shall be removed from the selection process for any of the following reasons:
Further, an applicant may be eliminated from consideration for failing to provide timely information or documents upon request, failing to appear for pre-employment testing, or otherwise being uncooperative in the processing of their application for employment.
B. Family History (ORC Chapters 2907 & 2919) – Applicants shall be removed from the selection process for any of the following reasons:
Further, an applicant may be removed from the selection process for non-compliance with a court order or legal contract to provide child support, alimony, or other financial responsibility as determined by the appropriate support enforcement bureau or a court of law. C. Employment History - Applicants shall be removed from the selection process for any of the following reasons:
Further, an applicant may be removed from the selection process for having a record of poor performance or disciplinary action, including, but not limited to a record of insubordination, history of absenteeism or tardiness, dishonesty, incompetence, or consumption of drugs and/or alcohol in violation of company policy while employed, or any other conduct during employment which would result in discipline if the applicant were an employee of the Division of Police.D. Military History (Uniformed Code of Military Justice - UCMJ) – Applicants shall be removed from the selection process for any of the following reasons:
Conviction of any article of the Uniform Code of Military Justice that is equivalent to a felony or otherwise listed disqualifying misdemeanor in this standard under the Ohio Revised Code (ORC).E. Driving Record (ORC Chapter 2903 & 4511) – Applicants shall be removed from the selection process for any of the following reasons:
Further, an applicant may be removed from the selection process for not possessing a valid driver’s license at any time during the application process. F. Gambling (ORC Chapter 2915) – The term “gambling offense” includes any activity defined as gambling by a federal, state, or local statute, or ordinance in the jurisdiction where the activity occurred. Applicants may be removed from the selection process for any of the following reasons:
G. Criminal Activity (All sections included in ORC chapter 2900) – Applicants shall be removed from the selection process for any of the following reasons:
Regarding criminal activity, the Division gives consideration to criminal acts by the applicant, and not merely whether the applicant has been convicted of a crime. Information about any criminal conduct by the applicant, or the applicant’s involvement or facilitation of criminal conduct, obtained during the selection process may result in a recommendation of disqualification, regardless of whether the applicant has any public record of criminal activity.
H. Substance Abuse (ORC Chapter 2925) – Applicants may be removed from the selection process for any of the following reasons:
For this standard, the “use” of drugs or a controlled substance includes, but is not limited to when an applicant smokes, ingests, tastes, injects, inhales, or otherwise tries, any illegal drug, unlawful prescription drug, or controlled substance in violation of Ohio law.

Job Description:NATURE OF WORKUnder the direction of a sergeant, police officers have the responsibility to enforce all local, state, and federal laws within the City of Westerville while also performing other duties as assigned.SUPERVISIONWork is performed within the guidelines of Division general orders and all applicable laws. Written Examination :The written examination consists of situational multiple-choice and essay questions that are offered in video formatting.
