Job Classification: Full time Firefighter/EMT
The City of Lincoln is establishing an eligibility list for the position of Firefighter/EMT. This list will be effective for two years once established. Candidates must fill out an application with both national testing network and the City of Lincoln. All applications and national testing network testing must be completed by June 15, 2026.

Salary Information: $45,090.48 starting salary ($74,634.12 after the second year). Current max rate for the rank of firefighter is $86,418.48. All salaries effective May 1, 2025. Contract negotiations are in progress for FY 26-27. Salaries effective May 1, 2026 are not yet available.
Benefit Information: Employee health insurance plans; HSA & PPO with employer paying 90% of premiums. Dental with employer paying 100%. Optional vision. Department Information: The Lincoln Fire Department is a full-time professional fire department with a staff of 23. We serve the historic City of Lincoln, IL located in central Illinois and have done so with pride since 1886. The Lincoln Fire Department provides many services to the citizens of Lincoln including: firefighting, code inspection, fire investigation, non-transport EMT-B service, vehicle rescue, tech rescue, water rescue, and haz-mat. Lincoln Fire Department responds to over 3000 calls for service annually. Lincoln Fire Department is comprised of 3 shifts that rotate 24 hours on / 48 hours off. Each shift is comprised of (1) Assistant Chief, (1) Captain, (1) Lieutenant, (1) fire inspector, (3) firefighters. EMT-B is required withing the first year (paid by employer). All candidates will complete Illinois Fire Service Institute (academy) with first year (paid by employer).
Area Information: Lincoln is in Logan County in Central Illinois. The City of Lincoln is a bedroom community with moderate expansion to the City’s west side. New Hires are required to reside within Logan County, IL within 1 year of employment.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Age: Candidates must be at least 20 years of age to test; and under 35 years of age. Special consideration for those with prior employment at a full time fire department. Candidates must be 21 years of age to accept a job offer.

Hiring Process:
1. Written test completed through NTN by June 15, 2026. www.nationaltestingnetwork.com
2. Oral interviews will be scheduled by the police and fire commission after June 15, 2026. Those who pass the written exam will be contacted for an interview.
3. Preliminary list will be compiled in ranked order from the highest score to the lowest score. Scoring will be 70% of NTN exam score plus 30% of interview score.
4. Additional bonus points (not cumulative, maximum of 5 points total per applicant) will be added for:
A. Military service - five (5) points. Awarded to applicants who have served a minimum of 12 months on active duty in the service of the U.S. military and who have either been honorably discharged or, in lieu of an honorable discharge, are still serving in an active or inactive reserve status.
B. Education - five (5) points. Awarded to applicants who have earned an associate's degree in fire science or emergency medical services for an accredited community or junior college. Also awarded to candidates who have earned a bachelor's degree in any filed for an accredited college or university.
C. Experience - up to five (5) points. Awarded to applicants employed by a municipality as a paid on call or part time certified firefighter (basic or advanced) shall be awarded 0.5 points for each year of service, up to 5 points. Candidates employed by a municipality or fire protection district as a full time certified firefighter (basic or advanced) for at least 2 years shall be awarded 5 points.
D. Residency - five (5) points. Awarded to applicants whose primary residence is located withing the City of Lincoln, IL.
E. EMT-B - five (5) points. Awarded to applicants that hold a current State of Illinois or National Registry EMT-B license or higher.
5. Final list will be compiled and remain in effect for 2 years, or until exhausted.
6. Psychological exam required upon job offer. (paid by employer)
7. Background check/fingerprinting may be required upon job offer. (paid by employer)
8. Physical exam and drug screening required upon job offer. (paid by employer)
9. CPAT card must be current upon job offer.
10. Training and pre employment screening repayment agreement required upon job offer.
