Position Title: Firefighter/Paramedic

The Itasca Fire Protection District (IFPD) is accepting applications to hire 3 Firefighter/Paramedics. This process will also result in creation of an eligibility list for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. This list will be valid for 2 years or until exhausted. Candidates are required to complete the National Testing Network’s (NTN) FireTEAM exam, Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA), and the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) to be considered for the position.

Salary Information: Step 1 starting salary is $81,516 + $4,000 paramedic stipend!

The pay scale contains 4 steps with a top amount at $114,149.

Benefit Information: Firefighter/Paramedics with IFPD are covered under the Itasca Professional Firefighter’s Association. Salary and benefits are negotiated with the Firefighter’s union.

Department Overview:

Itasca Fire Protection District is currently home to 25 sworn personnel, including a Fire Chief, three Battalion Chiefs, two Lieutenants, one Captain (Fire Prevention Bureau), an Assistant Director of Administration, and an Executive Administrative Assistant. The IFPD currently operates one main fire station and will open a second station in December 2025.

The district covers 6.5 miles and includes portions of Itasca, Addison, Wood Dale, as well as surrounding unincorporated areas of DuPage County. Itasca Fire Protection District provides mutual and automatic aid to a population of 269,970 residents in the surrounding areas. IFPD responds to approximately 1,800 incidents a year, including fire and EMS.

The Village of Itasca is in DuPage County, Illinois and is approximately 23 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. It has a population of 9,500 residents. Itasca is mixed residential and commercial areas. The large daytime population includes coverage of over 7 miles of Illinois tollway and the second tallest building outside of Chicago.

Job Requirements:

U.S. Citizenship
Possess a valid Illinois driver's license.
Be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED) at the time of application.
Vision requirements: natural or corrected.
No felony convictions
Age requirement: At least 20 and under 35 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age to be eligible for employment, unless the individual falls under one of the exceptions to the statutory maximum hiring age detailed in 70 ILCS 705/16.06 or 65 ILCS 2/10-2.1-6. Proof of date of birth is required.
Valid IDPH Paramedic License - due at the time of hire
Certification as a State of Illinois OSFM Basic Operations Firefighter (BOF) or pass a fire academy (at the district expense) and obtain a BOF within 90 days of hire.
Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Ladder Climb Certification - due at the time of hire.

Additional Requirements: Successfully pass the screening requirements, including a background investigation, psychological examination and medical examination.

Preference Points: Pursuant to Illinois State Statute, the Board of Commissioners will provide preference points for area listed below. Submission of the proper documents is required, at the time of Application or at a later date set by the Board, to ensure that the proper preference points are assigned.

Military Veteran – Applicants who served in the United States military actively for at least one (1) year and who were honorably discharged or are now on inactive or reserve duty shall receive five (5) preference points.
Resident of Itasca, IL – Applicants whose principal residence is located within the Village’s boundaries, at the time of his or her Application, may receive up to five (5) preference points.
Education (non-cumulative) – Applicants who have earned an Associate’s degree in the field of Fire Science or Emergency Medical Services, shall receive up to two (2) preference points, and candidates that have earned a Bachelor’s degree in any field shall receive up to four (4) preference points. An official transcript is required to confirm educational preference points. The Board reserves the right to award a greater number of preference points for job related degrees then non job related degrees, per the Statute.
Experience – Applicants with experience as a paid-on-call or part time firefighter, EMT or Paramedic, may receive up to five (5) preference points.
System Paramedic – Applicants who have obtained licensure as an EMT-P may receive up to five (5) preference points.
