Salary Information: Firefighter/EMT $13.61 per hour starting, Firefighter/Paramedic $15.40 per hour starting.

Department Overview: Payson Fire Department responds to over 3500 calls per year. As the largest department in the area, we provide structural and wildland firefighting, paramedic level emergency medical services, rescue, community education, and sponsor local and statewide firefighter trainings. Reserve firefighters complete 24 and 48-hour shifts upon successful completion of the orientation academy. Career hires are typically pulled from the reserve program.
Area Information: Payson Fire Department is situated in northern Gila county and provides service to the Town of Payson, East Verde Park, Tonto Apache Tribal Reservation, Oxbow Estates, and Round Valley as well as 42 miles of state highway. The department also has mutual/automatic aid with four other departments in the region.
Population: We serve a total service population approximately of 20,000 year-round. Summer populations can increase to 28,000.
US Citizen: Must be a US Citizen
High School Grad/GED: Minimum of a high school diploma or GED
Valid ARIZONA State Driver's License: Must possess, or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record
Ability to Read/Speak English: Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently
Hiring Process: The Town of Payson Fire Department typically hires career members from the reserve firefighter program. In order to be considered for employment, candidates must submit a completed application to the department that reflects the qualifications for the position. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance on the NTN written test and have proof of successful completion of a CPAT within six months prior to the posted application deadline. Candidates with the top scores of the FireTEAM written exam will be invited to an interview panel. Interview panels are tentatively set for the fall of 2020.
Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors :
New Hire Academy: In order to ensure that new hire reserve firefighters are successful, the department requires each new recruit to participate in an 8-10 week intern academy that covers firefighting, department operations, EMS operations along with various topics pertaining to the position. The academy is tentatively set to start November of 2020. Each day of training begins at 0800 and ends around 1700 hours with one hour for lunch. All orientation academy time is paid time.
