At this time, the Department is only pursuing candidates that are currently certified as Paramedics or currently enrolled in Paramedic school with graduation prior to the paramedic skills assessment portion of the recruitment process tentatively scheduled for the week of July 20, 2020. Candidates who are completing Paramedic training after June 2020 are encouraged to apply. Those candidates completing Paramedic training after June 12, 2020 must submit proof of Paramedic certification to the Human Resources Department and may be invited to participate in the Paramedic Skills exam at a later date.
Salary Information: $6,893.17 - $8,539.91 Monthly

Department Overview: The Downey Fire Department consists of approximately 100 employees providing a variety of comprehensive fire and life-safety services to the community of approximately 113,092 residents located in Southeast Los Angeles County. The 12.7 square mile City is protected by an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 2 rated fire department operating out of 4 strategically located fire stations. These stations house four Paramedic Engine Companies, one Truck Company, four Basic Life Support (BLS) Ambulances, one Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) Unit, and one Command Vehicle.
The Department consists of six Divisions: Administration, Operations, Emergency Medical Services, Prevention, Communications, and Emergency Preparedness. In 2018, the Downey Fire Department responded to a total of 10,706 incidents.

Valid CALIFORNIA State Driver's License: Valid California Driver’s License, and valid “Firefighters Endorsement” prior to completion of probation.
Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes
Vision: Candidates must pass a comprehensive medical evaluation.
Necessary Certifications: California State Certified Paramedic at time of appointment.
Currently enrolled in or attending paramedic school with graduation prior to completion of the paramedic skills assessment portion of the examination currently scheduled for the week of June 12, 2020.
Post Hire Training: Upon appointment, probationary firefighters participate in a six (6) to eight (8) week City of Downey Fire Fighting Training program involving field instruction. In a non-safety training capacity and under close supervision, learn to perform firefighting duties used in the suppression of structural, aircraft, wild-land and other types of fires.
Participates in training as an Emergency Medical Paramedic, learns to perform routine fire prevention activities; and learns other duties as required.
Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors: Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: All candidates must pass a comprehensive personal, employment and financial background investigation.
Driving Disqualifiers: All candidates must have an acceptable driving record.
Drug Use Disqualifiers: All candidates must successfully pass a comprehensive drug test.
Employment Disqualifiers: All personnel must pass a comprehensive psychological evaluation.
Financial Disqualifiers: All personnel must pass a comprehensive Financial background investigation prior to employment.
Non-Smoking Policy: The Downey Fire Department prohibits safety employees from the use of tobacco products either on or off the job.
Paramedic Work History: It is highly desirable for candidate to have previous work history as a paramedic.
Fire Academy Certification: Graduation from a California State Board of Fire Services accredited Basic Fire Academy, OR
Currently Enrolled in a California State Board of Fire Services accredited Basic Fire Academy AND graduate prior to date of hire.
