Venice Fire Rescue is currently hiring 24 full time Firefighter/Paramedics. These positions will be hired throughout the upcoming year. Those interviewed but not selected will remain on the list for future consideration. Applicants selected for processing will be contacted after that. The department requires the candidate PHQ. You can access the questionnaire through your candidate account. The PHQ must be completed by the closing date or you may not be considered further in the process.
When updating profiles and completing the PHQ, applicants should provide complete details and information regarding all firefighting experience and certifications; information regarding experience is critical in the selection process. All certifications must be valid and current. Expired certifications will not be accepted.
City applications should not be submitted until applicants have been contacted by the department with invitations to proceed.
Salary Information: Starting salary range, is $45,262 to $61,000 depending on qualifications and experience. The Firefighter/Paramedic may potentially be brought up to $84,000 with progression and available specialty pay depending on assignment and eligibility. All new hires are subject to the one-year probation.

Department Information: Venice Fire Rescue is a professional career department providing fire protection, rescue and first responder EMS services to its residents. Fire Rescue is led by Chief Shawn Carvey who has been with the City since 1996. Venice Fire Rescue has three stations and is staffed by 43 professional career firefighters responding to an average of 4,000 emergency calls a year while protecting our 25,000 residents spread over 15 square miles. The City of Venice includes a mix of residential and commercial structures along with urban/wildland interface and marine operation response.

City Information: Venice is located in southern Sarasota County along the Gulf of Mexico. Founded in 1926, the City of Venice is a historic, warm, friendly, beachfront community with more than 30 miles of inter-coastal waterways along the beautiful Gulf of Mexico providing for an extensive range of activities for all ages to enjoy. Activities ranging from the 10-mile long Legacy Bike Trail to golfing to marine recreation opportunities. Venice has several elementary schools located within the city's boundaries.

Vision: Far visual acuity: Far visual acuity shall be at least 20/30 binocular corrected with contact lenses or eyeglasses. Far visual acuity uncorrected shall be at least 20/100 binocular for wearers of hard contacts or spectacles. Successful long-term soft contact lens wearers shall not be subject to the uncorrected criterion. Peripheral vision in the horizontal meridian of less than 110 in the better eye or any condition that significantly affects peripheral vision in both eyes. Required to pass the Titmus II Color Vision test (ability to distinguish between red, yellow and green). Any recent or former history of ophthalmic surgery will require a medical clearance from the City of Venice’s medical provider. Any other eye condition that results in a person not being able to perform the essential job functions of a Firefighter. See NFPA 1582, 6.4.
Physical: Must complete entrance physical and must maintain fitness verified through annual physicals.
Academy Certification: State of Florida Minimum Standards Firefighter I & II, State of Florida Paramedic.
Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors : Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: Have no conviction of any felony or misdemeanor directly related to the position of being sought. Conviction or plea of nolo contendere of a felony, or conviction of a misdemeanor directly related to the position of firefighter, shall exclude an applicant from employment for a period of four (4) years after the expiration of sentence or final release by the Parole Commission unless the applicant, prior to the expiration of the four (4) year period, has received a full pardon or has had his or her civil rights restored. Where the sentence of an applicant is suspended or adjudication is withheld and a period of probation is imposed, the applicant must have been released from probation before being eligible for employment. See F.S. 112.011(2)(b) and F.S. 633.34(2). Have a good moral character as determined by investigation under procedure established by the division.
Driving Disqualifiers: Must meet the State of Florida Chapter 401 requirements for driving. A poor driving record will classify a candidate as undesirable; however, it will not necessarily remove a candidate from consideration.
Drug Use Disqualifiers: It is the policy of the City of Venice to maintain a workplace free of the presence, usage and influence of unlawful drugs and alcohol. As part of our Drug Free Workplace program, successful candidates must pass a drug screen and pre-employment physical exam.
Employment Disqualifiers: A poor employment record will classify a candidate as undesirable; however, it will not necessarily remove a candidate from consideration. Failure of any of the following pre-employment tests:
Financial Disqualifiers: A poor credit history and financial background will classify a candidate as undesirable; however, it will not necessarily remove a candidate from consideration.
Additional Disqualifiers: Be a nonuser of tobacco or tobacco products for at least 1 year immediately preceding application, as evidenced by the sworn affidavit of the applicant. See F.S. 633.34(6). Not have falsified his/her application or personnel history.
Types, Locations, and Number of Tattoos/Decals/Piercings : Perspective members shall be evaluated by the Fire Chief, or his/her designee, and may be used as a disqualifier for potential employment or appointment as a member. At no time shall a perspective member be employed or appointed if said person has visible tattoos/decals/piercings that are offensive, in excess, vulgar, or otherwise deemed detrimental to the professional appearance and positive public image of members. No perspective member shall have tattoos/decals of any type that are visible

If you received your EMT or Paramedic training in another state, contact the State of Florida EMS Office in Tallahassee to learn how to become certified in the State of Florida (www.doh.sate.fl.us/demo/ems/). If you are an honorably discharged Veteran, you may be eligible for Veteran's Preference in consideration of your for employment with the City of Venice.
