The Hutchinson Fire Department is currently recruiting Firefighters. All testing must be completed by SPRING 2020.
Salary Information: $14.20 - $22.16 Hourly Wage

Department Overview: The Hutchinson Fire Department has 90 uniformed members and 1 civilian employee. We operate six engine companies, two truck companies, and Crossman 10 brush trucks, two water tenders, two reserve engines, and a heavy rescue trailer from six strategically located fire stations. Fire Headquarters is located in our Command and Training Center with a four-story training tower with two burn rooms and two large paved training pads located on 53 acres of land. The department provides fire suppression, basic life support EMS response, hazardous material - technician level, technical heavy rescue (confined space, high and low angle, structural rescue, and water rescue) and wildland firefighting. Demands on the fire department will continue to increase, most notably in the areas of medical service, special operations, and special events. Schooling Prior and Post Hiring:
New firefighter recruits that join our department must complete a six-week academy conducted by the Fire Training Division. The Recruit Academy consists of courses designed to review IFSAC and the NFPA Standard 1001, Firefighter I and II skills, Hazardous Materials Operations skills, Kansas Emergency Medical Technician skills, and Hutchinson Fire Department policies and procedures. Fire recruits are instructed by the Academy Cadre. The Cadre consists of current members in suppression who are assigned to the Academy for the 6 weeks to assist the Training Division. Recruits are tested and evaluated weekly throughout the process on both written and practical skills and are given both a final written exam and a practical skills test. Hutchinson Fire Department Recruits must pass all exams with a minimum score of at least 70%.
The department works a modified 56-hour work week. The 24-hour shift schedule is as follows: On-Off-On-Off-On-Off-Off-Off-Off – our firefighters work 10 days per month with four consecutive days off occurring 3-4 times per month. The schedule then repeats.
Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers:
Felony or Serious Misdemeanor convictions will disqualify a candidate.
No major violations within the previous 5 years, or multiple violations in previous 3 years. No suspended license within 2 years. See Fire Department Website for details.
