The Barberton Police Department is currently hiring for Police Officer! All candidates must complete the department application (located here), and FCRA Disclosure and Authorization Form (located here), as well as the FrontLine National exam through National Testing Network by September 6, 2022.

Salary Information: $23.14 - $34.22. Starting hourly wage is dependent on several factors including: OPOTA Certification, Bachelor or Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or four (4) years of Peace Officer experience or combination of these factors.

Age: Must be twenty-one (21) years at time of examination. No applicant shall receive an original appointment if that applicant has reached the age of thirty-five (35) years at the time of examination (ORC 124.41).
Citizenship Required: Currently commissioned applicants, with an original appointment from another jurisdiction, shall NOT receive an appointment and status change to the Barberton Police Department if that applicant has reached the age of forty-five (45) years at the time of the examination.

Probation: Police Officer candidates must successfully complete a one-year probationary period. If Police Officer Certification from the State of Ohio has not been obtained before hire, an 18-month probationary period will be given.
Licensure: Applicant must obtain Police Officer Certification from the State of Ohio within one (1) year from the original hiring date.
Nature of Work: This is a full-time, general duty, public protection law enforcement and criminal investigating position. A complete job description of duties is available upon request.
Physical Agility Testing: Must possess the strength and physical ability to successfully perform the essential job functions of Police Officer, and be free from any condition that would preclude one from successfully performing said function or would pose a direct threat to the health or safety of oneself or others. Applicants selected for further consideration after initial screening will be required to obtain a certificate attesting to successful completion of physical agility testing by the Police Agility Program at the Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C). Applicants who have completed the O.P.O.T.A. Basic Peace Officer Academy within one year from the date of the written exam will be required to submit proof of the their successful O.P.O.T.A. academy physical fitness testing in lieu of the physical testing at Tri-C.
Physical: Applicant must, at the time of initial employment and thereafter, be a non-smoker and non-user of tobacco. Applicant must meet and maintain physical fitness and medical standards in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Barberton Police Department. Visual acuity must be correctable to at least 20/20 and have normal color vision. Hearing must be normal.
Other: Due to the nature and conditions of the work and position, a criminal conviction record may be a bar to employment.
Testing: In addition to a written Civil Service test, applicants will be subject to an extensive background check, physical agility tests, oral interview, psychological examination, comprehensive physical examination, polygraph examination and such other examinations relative to the position. Additional credit for those who pass the written test, with a minimum raw score of 70%, is available up to a maximum of 25 percent (25%). (See “Extra Credit”) If candidate terminates employment during probation of his/her own volition, he/she will be required to reimburse the City of Barberton the cost of all tests and training.
Extra Credit Available (25% Maximum) : MILITARY CREDIT: 20% Twenty percent (20%) military credit to those who pass the Civil Service test and who completed service in the Uniform Services, who has been honorably discharged from the Uniform Services or transferred to the Reserve with evidence of satisfactory service who is a resident of this state and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than one hundred eighty (180) days of active duty service pursuant to an Executive Order of the President of the United States or an act of Congress may file a Certificate of Service or honorable discharge shall receive a credit of twenty percent (20%) of the person’s total grade. A person who receives credit under this section shall not receive an additional credit pursuant to Civil Service Rule VI Section 7 (b). Applicants must attach a copy of their DD-214 form showing an “Honorable Discharge” to receive military credit. MILITARY CREDIT: (CIVIL SERVICE RULE VI SECTION 7 (b) : 15% Applicants in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade. Applicants must attach a copy of Reserve Status from the armed forces showing completion of the initial entry level training to receive reserve military credit. RESIDENCY CREDIT: 5% Five percent (5%) credit to those who pass the Civil Service test and who can demonstrate residency within the corporate limits of the City of Barberton for a period of one year prior to the date of application receipt. A signed affidavit will be accepted as proof of residency. Residency must be established at least 1 year prior to date of application. See attached Affidavit for definition. Residency Affidavits must be signed and notarized prior to application submission or may be notarized in the Civil Service Office at the time of application submission if a notary is available.> PRIOR CITY EMPLOYMENT CREDIT: .01-5% When proper proof of acceptable and satisfactory prior service with the City of Barberton is presented to the Commission at the time of application submission, such applicant being otherwise eligible, shall be granted an additional tenth of one percent (.01%) for every completed month the applicant has worked for the City for a maximum of 5% total extra credit EDUCATIONAL CREDIT: (Credit given only for highest degree attained) 15% BACHELOR’S DEGREE - Fifteen percent credit to those who pass the Civil Service test and who have completed and possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. 10% ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE - Ten percent credit to those who pass the Civil Service test and who have completed and possess an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from an accredited college or university. CERTIFICATION CREDIT: 20% CERTIFIED POLICE OFFICER - Twenty percent credit to those who pass the Civil Service test and are currently certified by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council as a Police Officer prior to the examination.
