JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Salem's Police Department is hiring for Certified Out-of-State Lateral Police Officers. In-State Lateral Police Officers are not required to complete Frontline National and should contact the department to fill out an application.As a leading law enforcement agency in the Pacific Northwest, the Salem Police Department is searching for outstanding candidates for the position of lateral police officer. The Salem Police Department has outstanding opportunities to enhance and further your career. Our agency has a full complement of special teams and units to include: SWAT, Bomb Squad, Mobile Response Team (Civil Unrest Team), Tactical Negotiations Team, Narcotics Unit, DEA Task Force, Persons and Property Crime Detectives, Traffic Team, Downtown Enforcement Team, School Resource Officers, Crash Reconstructionist, Computer Forensics, Behavioral Health Unit, Training Division, Peer Support Team, Civil Investigations Team, and Patrol.
We are the third largest municipality in the state of Oregon whose responsibilities include providing public safety services and peace of mind to the over 170,000 residents in the capital city. In November of 2020 the Salem Police Department will have the largest police facility in the state and we challenge you to continue your career in this brand-new facility.
The Salem Police Department is the recognized leader in our region for technology and training to better serve our community and neighboring smaller agencies. We have a fleet of state-of-the-art patrol cars with the latest computer technology, cameras, license plate reader systems, and weapons platforms. As a Salem Police Officer, you will be issued your needed equipment to include: uniforms, weapons (handgun and rifle), boots, duty gear, iPhone, and more. The City offers an excellent compensation and benefits package which can be found by clicking here. As part of total compensation package, qualified Lateral candidates may receive up to 80 hours of vacation/sick time. Starting salary step will be based on years of qualified experience.

Additional incentives: The City of Salem offers 2%-10% premium pay for a combination of DPSST certification levels, training, and college education. Police Officers who have been with the City for 10 continuous years receive a 3% longevity increase.There is also 5% bilingual pay incentive for language skills in Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai, Lowland Lao, Cambodian, Highland Lao (Mien), Hmong, or certification in American Sign Language. Qualified bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.Career police officers with the Salem Police Department have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of specialized units or special teams. Extra duty pay is paid for SWAT (5%), HAZMAT (5%), Field Training Officer (5%), K-9 (5%), K-9 decoy (2.5%), and TNT (5%).
